US wants to keep 9 bases in Afghanistan, Karzai says

KABUL -- The U.S. wants to keep nine bases in Afghanistan after American combat troops withdraw in 2014 and the Afghan government will let them as long as it gets "security and economic guarantees," President Hamid Karzai said Thursday in his first public offer in talks about the future relationship between the two uneasy allies.

U.S. officials have made no final announcement about how many troops might remain in Afghanistan after 2014, although they have said as many as many as 12,000 U.S. and coalition forces could remain to train and advise Afghans and continue counterterrorism operations against al-Qaida and other extremists.

The Afghan government would have to approve any such decision, but months of negotiations over a bilateral security agreement have been troubled with disagreements over handing over detainees and anger over alleged misbehavior by American troops.

Karzai has made many statements about the issue but gave his first specific statement about bases at a ceremony at Kabul University.

"We are giving the bases, nine bases they want from Afghanistan in all of Afghanistan," he said.

But in return, Afghanistan wants a U.S. commitment to boost its security, strengthen its armed forces and promise long-term economic development.

"It is our condition that they bring security and bring it quickly and strengthen the Afghan forces and the economy," he said. "When they (the U.S.) do this, we are ready to sign" a partnership agreement.

>> security and economic guarantees

Yeah, especially those “economic” guarantees.

We ought to pull out completely and just let the extortionist have the place. We can nuke it from orbit later when it reverts to the violent moongod cesspool it’s been for about a thousand years.

That’s one of those “rhetorical” questions, right? :-)

Short answer, “yes”.

But in return, Afghanistan wants a U.S. commitment

Well this will be an interesting discussion. Who do you trust most to honor such commitments? Karzai or The One ?

That is a real race to the bottom. I think Karzai because he is more the standard corruption model. He can be bought or at least rented. Obama wants the US brought down to suit his ideology and hatred.

CLOSE THEM!

Bush Waterboarded jehadist clowns...they gave us bin laden...

Our spooks found Bin Laden...but too late for Bush to do anything about it

the pretender decided against his own better judgement to kill bin laden.

He is DEAD

time to get out.

until the White Hut turns back to the White House, its best for the military to pull back...because with him as _resident he could use the military to destroy our true friends like Israel....

President Hamid Karzai, knows that after the Americans leave he is a dead man, it is in his personal interest to have a U.S. ground presence in Afghanistan. I just hope we don't end up with a Shah of Afghanistan.

Ask the British about leaving Afghanistan in 1842! Sometimes it is harder to get out!

It makes more sense than pulling out completely, which is what we did in Iraq.

Don't think of them as bases.

Think of them as giant American Taxpayer money funnels!

NINE bases in Afghanistan, but NOTHING in all of Iraq?

Which area is more critical to our nation strategically?
Which area cost us more in blood and treasure?

You are so focused on the negative you can’t see what they are.

They are Iranian containment.

You don’t see the big picture

Why contain evil? To give it the opportunity to break it’s bonds? Better to just eliminate it.

You think he’ll stay behind? Ha. He’ll leave with the coalition. You know the drill, talk C about their benefactor, then quitely slip out to live ‘in exile’ in France, Sweden, Holland, etc. with billions they feathered in Swiss bank accounts.

By not staying and fighting he gets an agreement with the Taliban to not extradite him. But they’ll still execute him for cooperating with the coalition. When the money runs out the local support dies -literally.
