"Conservatives" are not "split" over Immigration. It's an acid test. If you are not in favor of the Gang of Eight amnesty hustle, and believe that the State should first secure our border and enforce Immigration law already on the books, you might be a Conservative.

Republicans may be split over this issue, but that split goes back to Eisenhower and Taft, Goldwater and Rockefeller, Reagan and Ford, etc.
