Elite U.S. troops were completely capable of saving Ambassador Chris Stevens during the Benghazi Consulate attacks on September 11, 2012. Elements of the highly specialized Combatant Commanders In-Extremis (CIF) units are always on alert, on forward deployment, ready to respond. Their job description is to hit the ground in 3 to 5 hours. CIF elements are ready to engage in active combat anywhere in their region, 3 to 5 hours after the call.
Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense at the time, either misled the U.S. Congress or was incompetent. Panetta testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on February 7, 2013 that the U.S. military could not have responded in less than 9 to 12 hours.
Obama's first secretary of defense, Robert Gates, told CBS's Face the Nation on May 12, 2013 that "[w]e don't have a ready force standing by" in that region.
But we absolutely do "have a ready force standing by" to reach any trouble spot in a few hours. Insider reports previously revealed that CIF elements were training in Croatia and could have been in Benghazi in three and a half hours.

It is a virtual certainty that the 6th Fleet monitored the events in Benghazi from the beginning, had a well planned intervention ready to launch, and were ordered to stand down. If nothing else the Republican Congress owes it to history and the country to learn who gave the stand down order and why.

I know these exist, their goal is rescue, and they are stationed in certain regions around the world. I know this because a documentary was talked about being made of one of these units. That was a few years ago. I won't say where that one was but I knew it existed. When this emergency happened, I wondered then if one of these units could have been used as they stand at the ready 24/7.
The Marines who died that fateful day unnecessarily but nonetheless in service to the country they loved & swore to defend will be remembered this Memorial Day.

An airliner from Catania Sicily (right beside Sigonella) to Benghazi is 1 hour 5 minutes. F-16s from Sig 40 to 45 Min max. AC-130 Gunship 1 hour 40. F-16s disperse the crowd the AC-130 gets there and it is all over. Those Aircraft were at Sig and could have ended this. The lies about this event are terrible. People need to go to Jail.

There is no doubt we had/have the capability (and many the will). The “leadership” is rotten and is forceably infecting the the lower structures with the same.

(2) shamefully abandons, surrenders, or delivers up any command, unit, place, or military property which it is his duty to defend;
(3) through disobedience, neglect, or intentional misconduct endangers the safety of any such command, unit, place, or military property;
(4) casts away his arms or ammunition;
(5) is guilty of cowardly conduct;
(6) quits his place of duty to plunder or pillage;
(7) causes false alarms in any command, unit, or place under control of the armed forces;
(8) willfully fails to do his utmost to encounter, engage, capture, or destroy any enemy troops, combatants, vessels, aircraft, or any other thing, which it is his duty so to encounter, engage, capture, or destroy; or
(9) does not afford all practicable relief and assistance to any troops, combatants, vessels, or aircraft of the armed forces belonging to the United States or their allies when engaged in battle; shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.”
You hit it right on the nose. Add in the Ready Reaction (CIF) and they could have routed the bunch in an hour or so. The administration let them die to provide political cover for the crimes they were committing.
Wonder what Col Lakin is thinking. He refused to obey orders from someone he wasn’t sure of - he wanted proof.
Obama is AWOL. There’s no other explanation.
