Just reformatting a hard drive does not mean that all that data is gone.
Even data that has been re-written over many times.

Yeah, you could be right. The only problem I see with that idea is that who is doing the sting? The DOJ? The FBI? Not exactly innocent bystanders in all this... There isn’t really anyone in the Federal bureaucracy that is trustworthy anymore.

There are methods to effectively clean an individual hard drive, but if that data has ever been electronically transmitted, either to or from that individual device, it is almost certainly recoverable and traceable. If an email has been sent or received, it is recoverable regardless of what happens to any individual computer hard drive.
