Rate Shock: In California, Obamacare To Increase Individual Health Insurance Premiums By 64-146%

One of the most serious flaws with Obamacare is that its blizzard of regulations and mandates drives up the cost of insurance for people who buy it on their own. This problem will be especially acute when the law’s main provisions kick in on January 1, 2014, leading many to worry about health insurance “rate shock.”

Last week, the state of California claimed that its version of Obamacare’s health insurance exchange would actually reduce premiums. “These rates are way below the worst-case gloom-and-doom scenarios we have heard,” boasted Peter Lee, executive director of the California exchange.

But the data that Lee released tells a different story: Obamacare, in fact, will increase individual-market premiums in California by as much as 146 percent.

Lee’s claims that there won’t be rate shock in California were repeated uncritically in some quarters. “Despite the political naysayers,” writes my Forbes colleague Rick Ungar, “the healthcare exchange concept appears to be working very well indeed in states like California.” A bit more analysis would have prevented Rick from falling for California’s sleight-of-hand.

Here’s what happened. Last week, Covered California—the name for the state’s Obamacare-compatible insurance exchange—released the rates that Californians will have to pay to enroll in the exchange.

For both 25-year-olds and 40-year-olds, then, Californians under Obamacare who buy insurance for themselves will see their insurance premiums double.

Medical care and service has dropped like a stone here -

The rate increase does not affect those that cannot afford it, this is just a bigger burden on the middle class.

Whenever the DemonRATS pass a law, it either costs us money or freedom or both.

I can’t remember in my life time when the Democrats ever passed a law that lowered taxes or improved the job outlook in the private sector or didn’t encroach on Liberty.

Hopefully this nightmare will motivate all people to take charge of their health, like excercising, eating whole foods, avoiding GMO and processed foods, etc. I really believe that many of the diseases that are rampant today are because of the crap that we eat.

Jimmy Carter allowed home brewing. Yeah, that far back.

Read the article. He was repeating a very large lie. No telling if your hack knew if it was a lie or not but it was indeed false.

Obama and his Marxist buddies are smiling.

They clearly know the evil MSM will help the Statists push Single Payer as the ONLY solution.

SO ...... Chief Justice Roberts.

In light of the treatment by the Court, that the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment contains the "Equal Protection" doctrine of the Fourteenth Amendment, what say you about this DISCRIMINATORY and ARBITRARY EXORBITANT TAX that the citizens of CA are subjected to?! (although ... it couldn't happen to a nicer state).

The Equal Protection Clause textually limits only state government, hence it is literally inapplicable to the federal government. However, since Bolling v. Sharpe (1954), the Court has developed the doctrine that the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment has an equal protection component with equivalent requirements to the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Equal Protection doctrine (if not literally the Equal Protection Clause) has thus become applicable to all governmental action, whether state, local, or federal.

“Hopefully this nightmare will motivate all people to take charge of their health...”

And, evaluate their own mental health if they voted for Obama.
