At least nine dead after deadly tornadoes hit Oklahoma City region

At least nine people have died after a series of tornadoes slammed through the Oklahoma City area Friday, with at least 100 people injured, while heavy flooding hampers recovery efforts.

The state medical examiner's office confirmed Saturday morning that the death toll had risen to at least nine, including at least two children. Meanwhile the Oklahoma State Department of Health reported that Oklahoma City-area hospitals treated 104 people. More than half of those were people who had been cut or pierced.

Law enforcement officers and Red Cross damage assessment workers are heading out to view damage in the city and its suburbs. Heavy rain was forecast for Saturday, which could hinder rescue and recovery efforts further.

“The flooding is the major problem in the Oklahoma City metro,” Lt. Jay Barnett of the Oklahoma City Police Department told The Oklahoman. “A lot of that has to do with people who, for whatever reason, instead of sheltering decided to outrun the storm and got caught in it.”

When I was a youngster visiting in OK, we saw a tornado coming and went into an underground 'root cellar' - we heard the roar of the thing as it passed only about 100 feet away from the home (undamaged.)

After we came out, two huge oak trees nearby were ripped to shreds, only the huge trunks still remaining.

Based on some of the reports from the OKC tv reporters last evening, people were told to get underground or get out of the way — meaning leave the presumed path. Thus, many got in their vehicles in an attempt to flee, but the interstates and other major highways experienced major traffic jambs — so people were caught on the roadways with the only protection being their vehicles.

After watching those clouds on FNC last night, we’re lucky it wasn’t much worse. This proves the importance of being prepared, and obeying the warnings. Oklahomans know what do to, but we still were very fortunate with that kind of mesocyclone system.

Sometimes I think 'modern technologies' work a disservice on those living in 'tornado alley' - because people have lost the old fashioned wisdom of 'keeping and eye and ear out.'

During tornado 'season' those living in Oklahoma always kept a sharp eye on the skies, and they knew when to head for their shelters - early! It wasn't uncommon for people to spend several nights in those shelters.

Today they think the news will be their eyes and ears - and they tend to wait too long before they move to underground shelters. Too often they flee, thinking they will get away, and all too often they then become a victim in that flight.

You hit on one of the biggest problems. Getting in a car and trying to drive to safety all too often proves to be fatal.

Those same people often live in apartments or houses that have no underground tornado protection. Bad idea, poor planning.

The most damaging tornado in history hit here 2 weeks ago. The death toll of 24 was phenominally low and 7 of those were in an area normally considered safe. Last night most of the 9 deaths were from people in cars which were hit when it first started. We were warned all day to be ready and most were. “Technology” saved many, many people.

I didn’t think so either at first, I assumed joplin was worse. Since then the reports are saying the dollar amount in damage is the worst. I’ve talked with insurance people who acknolegde it also.
