Connecticut legislators strengthen ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines

Connecticut lawmakers who passed strict new gun control measures in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre approved a package of revisions Monday to reduce confusion about the new rules and expand the list of officials who can legally possess restricted firearms.

Both chambers of the state legislature voted to adopt changes and exemptions to the bipartisan deal that strengthened the state’s assault weapons ban and banned the sale of high-capacity magazines.

The legislation emerged from a bipartisan working group that sought to refine the original gun control bill, which proponents hailed as one of the most far-reaching in the nation, in response to ambiguity that came to light in part through feedback from constituents and gun owners. A spokesman for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said he supports the changes.

The new bill allows individuals to possess and register assault weapons they purchased or placed on consignment prior to or on April 4, the day the gun control law was passed, but did not receive the items until after that date.

The bill also clarifies the status of .22-caliber rimfire rifles, defining them as assault weapons when fitted with a detachable magazine and more than one of several features including a folding or telescoping stock, bayonet mount or flash suppressor. With passage of Monday’s revisions, the firearm so constructed will no longer be available for sale in Connecticut, but consumers who purchased it since April 4 will be allowed to register and keep it.

A .22 rifle with detachable mag and pistol grip is now a "assault weapon."

California is in the process of doing the same (defining semi-auto 22s as “assault weapons”, doesn’t even need to have a pistol grip). There is also a bill that bans mere posession of a magazine > 10 rounds.

If these can’t eventually be overturned on the basis of Heller/McDonald, then the 2A is dead because Heller/McDonald would be meaningless.

The next thing we’ll find out is any revolver with two hand grips will be considered an assault rifle.

The game of confiscation has begun. It won’t be long before they start demanding any semi-automatic pistols be turned in.

Don’t trust those a-holes in connecticut’s government.They’re liars.

I want a bayonet mount and flash suppressor on my Ruger 10/22. It’s much more deadly and menacing with that flash suppressor to hide the plume of flame from a .22 round, and I imagine psychopaths are lining up to get bayonet-capable .22s for their crime sprees.

It's not about safety. It's about control of the masses.

Never forget that the American Revolution began when the British tried to disarm the Colonists.

What part of “shall not be infringed.” do these people not under stand? This is unconstitutional.

There is no misunderstanding on their part. They detest the Constitution with every fiber of their being.

They’re not misinterpreting, they’re attacking.

Rock River Arms (I think) announced a .22lr AR 15 styled rifle that was exempt under the CT law... so CT has answered by including the .22lr rimfire cartridge. They probably also included all rimfire calibers.

It was Stag Arms. They thought they’d come up with a compliant one so they wouldn’t have to move. Guess what? :P

Do you mean a grip in front of the normal grip?

If it is then they will ban it as soon as they find out. Seems that CT is now just a communist state. They crush liberty in a fraction of a second.

You can’t use ancient Greek on these bungwads. Translate to the colloquial: “ Come and get it, Bleephole “
