Giant ‘frankenfish’ caught in Virginia may be biggest ever

It was already a special day for Caleb Newton and Phil Wilcox — the two friends enjoying a bass-fishing bachelor party on the Potomac River. But when the men spotted a long shadow swimming among the reeds, they knew things were only going to get more interesting.

Gliding among the grass was a northern snakehead, a gruesome animal known as a “Frankenfish” by some. And it was big. But it wasn’t until they wrestled it into the boat that they realized it might be the biggest anyone has ever caught with a hook and line.

“I knew it was a good fish, but I didn’t know how good,” Mr. Newton, 27, said Tuesday.

The two men have been fishing partners for years, and they know the Potomac River and its tributaries like the back of their hands. On Saturday, they joined friends and family for the Big Bass Bachelor Fishing Tournament in honor of Mr. Wilcox’s upcoming wedding.

“We pulled up to the spot, put the trolling motor down on the boat, and I saw the fish in the water,” Mr. Wilcox said. “It was absolutely huge.”

This is the fish known as Pla Chon in Thailand and SEA
It makes a great salted fermented preserved fish paste .
An enterprising entrepreneur here in the US could set up a small factory making this product with a good recipe and make millions of dollars marketing it throughout the SE Asian community here . No need for import the old and funky stuff from SEA anymore . Fresh is always better . SEA folks would but that product all day long forever .

The Chinese say don’t worry about the invasion of the northern snakehead, just remember to use plenty of ginger when cooking it.

Remember—people are the biggest preditor—we can control them by consuming them—same with the feral pigs, rattlesnakes etc...

Either the photo is shopped, or this guy has freakishly large hands and forearms.

BTW, are frankenfish edible?

Google the Fijiian Islands & the practice once known as “long pig banquets”. Missionaries were regarded as extra tasty.

The Fijiians invented the wooden tossed salad fork only that wasn’t its original use.

I go bass fishing in Canada once a year on a private lake, and we are instructed to kill any snakeheads we catch.

The snakehead is considered invasive and as such any caught in U.S. waters are to be killed as well.

BTW, are frankenfish edible?

They originally arrived here from SE Asia as imports for the food wishes of immigrants. Someone decided to stock them somewhere and they spread.

Down by the dam. I don't know how deep it is there though. At the north end of the lake, we have a small (2-3ft wide by 2-3 inches deep) stream. We'll need a tropical storm or two to park over the Kerrville area before the lake fills again.
