A surge in migrant traffic across the Southwest border into Texas has resulted in a milestone: the front line of the battle against illegal crossings from Mexico has shifted for the first time in over a decade away from Arizona to the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.
This shift has intensified a bitter debate under way in the Senate over whether the border is secure enough now, or ever will be, to move ahead with legislation that could give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants already here.
On Monday, the Senate was scheduled to resume a long series of votes on an immigration bill that is promising to end a cycle — playing out since the early 1990s — in which each time the Border Patrol cracks down in one enforcement zone along the border, migrants move to another.
Now the Rio Grande Valley has displaced the Tucson enforcement zone as the hot spot, with makeshift rafts crossing the river in increasing numbers, high-speed car chases occurring along rural roads and a growing number of dead bodies turning up on ranchers’ land, according to local officials.
“There is just so much happening at the same time — it is overwhelming,” said Benny Martinez, the chief deputy in the Sheriff’s Department of Brooks County, Tex., 70 miles north of the border, where smugglers have been dropping off carloads of immigrants who have made it past Border Patrol checkpoints.
The increase in Texas is taking place even as the Obama administration says it has achieved unprecedented control over the border with Mexico. The administration, President Obama said last week, has “put border security in place,” with illegal crossings “near their lowest level in decades.”

Has mexico annexed texas yet? Considering that a sizable part of the mexican population currently resides in texas and california, I would have thought that we just give those two states to mexico, and be done with it.

Go to San Antonio and find out who really owns the Alamo now. Santa Anna is back, and he brought a multitude of Aztlan Amigos with him.

Not exactly a comforting statement for Texans....mad rush to beat the immigration bill passing.
The feds and business interests are working together against the border states to keep the influx of cheap labor and loyal voters flowing north. The only way back to sovereignty is to tell the feds to go pound sand, and take of it yourselves. it’s a tough choice to make, and you will meet much resistance from the current powerbrokers. It all come’s down to a battle of wills.
There are quite a few Mexicans, of Asian ancestry. After the railroads were completed, in The West, many Chinese laborer neighborhoods were burned down by the locals, and the residents fled south of the border.
Mad rush to the border will intensify so they can be “INSIDE” the USA when the Immigration Bill passes....then wait it out.
Things are going to get rough.
Heard some Blacks are marching to Washington to oppose the immigration bill, they stand to loose most.....might be too late with Reid now pushing it be a a wrap for the Senate by the end of the week...then it goes to the House.....
Who ever said that manifest destiny only goes from east to west? Why not south? If you can’t close the border, move it south! Laraza promotes it, so why don’t the border states simply start taking over the northern mexican states, and taking charge of their futures? The entire gulf of mexico belongs to us, along with the baja peninsula and gulf of california, and mexico becomes that much smaller. The spaniards had their chance, and they lost, the mexicans had their chance, and they lost, Now it’s our turn to take charge, and claim that land for our own, by our standards. There’s enough real estate there to form a new nation. Something to think about.
San Antonio is totally gone! Austin is almost as bad. Go anywhere and everyone is speaking spanish. I commented to my husband yesterday that I am beginning to feel like a stranger in my own country. Free breakfast and lunch for poor children during the summer and they send home bags for the weekend. Fast food restaurant people all speaking spanish and when they wait on me I can barely understand them. Schools teaching in spanish. I am not a mexican hater but it makes you want to cry to see what this once great state is becoming.
Eric and Julia at the New York Slime report that the US has plugged the border in Arizona. My oh my .... what will they report next? California has a surplus? Hahahahaha.....oh wait.
there were quite a few Chinese in mexico and when the Mexican revolutionaries starting going about sacking and looting they fled north.
A family named Wong in San Antonio has been there since the Mexican Revolution. They started a famous restaurant and did very well. Are doing well.

My wife and I have visited Big Bend National Park three or four times in the last ten years. It’s one of our favorite parks. There are several spots that overlook the Rio Grande where you see people on the other side. Some of them try to sell objects left in the parking lots of the outlooks on the U.S. side. It’s a huge area for the Border Patrol to cover, but I don’t know how long anyone would last in that desert on foot.
