Senate rejects border fence
The Washington Times ^ | June 18, 2013 | Stephen Dinan

Minutes after the border fence, senators also voted to weaken current law that requires the government to have biometric checks such as fingerprints or eye-scans for every visitor to the U.S. — a recommendation of the 9/11 commission that looked into the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York.

Senators on Tuesday rejected building the 700 miles of double-tier border fencing Congress authorized just seven years ago, with a majority of the Senate saying they didn’t want to delay granting illegal immigrants legal status while the fence was being built.

The 54-39 vote to reject the fence shows the core of the immigration deal is holding. The vote broke mostly along party lines, though five Republicans, including Sen. Marco Rubio and the rest of the bill’s authors, voted against the fence, and two Democrats voted for it.

Let the nation collapse. Rebuild later. We deserve it.

Harry Reid said the other day that it would “take decades” to secure the border.

It will NEVER be secured as it means unending political power for the Democrats and unending cheap labor for businesses who are willing to sell out their own country and its heritage for a better bottom line.

The 2006 vote to build the fence came back to haunt some of its supporters, including Mr. Obama, who was in the Senate at the time. He was harshly criticized by immigrant-rights advocates back home in Illinois, who said they felt betrayed by the vote.

A year after that 2006 vote, however, Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison wrote legislation giving the Homeland Security Department the option to build less fencing.

I suggest everyone change their affiliation from “republican” to “Independent”...tomorrow.

What took so long? I did just that in 2007 and have never regretted it.

Decades? Decades?

It took Israel less than 3 years to secure 420 miles of border at a cost of 14 billion.

Plans for this fence have been in the works for almost 30 years. They know exactly how long it will take, how much it will cost and the risk mitigation of how many people will actually make it across should they try.

Decades?

They know exactly how much it would cost to pay off each rancher who owns land on or near the border. They know which construction companies will be hired to build the fence. They know exactly where homes, hotels and other infrastructure will go and how much it will cost.

Decades?

A decent project manager can put this together in 6 months and have it built in less than 5 years. And if he isn’t dealing with unions bring it in on or near budget.

Decades?

i don’t think the fence would work as well as shoot to kill policy or landmines

time to be more offensive against the parasites by using deterrent such as that.

oh yeah, kick out the welfares too. but we know that’s never going to happen.

Think of this moment every time you take your shoes and belt off and then raising your hands like a prisoner when going through airport security.

There are many "conservatives" who oppose a border fence. Ask any Rick Perry supporter.

It will likely never happen with widespread Republican opposition. There is no will and thus no way.

"Here in San Diego, we have proven that the border infrastructure system does indeed work, It is highly effective."

Ditto.
And though they reject biometric scans of visitors, I just read somewhere this week that all of OUR biometric scans are going to be in the national database.

Levin is the guy who put Rubio where he is. Without “the great one”.... most of us would not even know who Rubio is.

Well then, Rubio has stuck a rather large knife in Levin's back now, hasn't he? It's not Mark's fault that the guy lied through his teeth to everyone.

I don’t disagree. Hopefully Mark will learn to be a little more careful..... do a little better background work on these people etc before giving them a public stage. If I say I like someone etc.... it doesn’t have any impact. These radio guys have a lot of impact, and therefore a lot of responsibility. But yeah... I agree with you.
