The unemployment rate in Sacramento and California registered a significant drop in May for the second consecutive month, but analysts cautioned that the steadily improving numbers conceal a large number of people who are working in low-wage jobs or who are no longer firmly attached to the workforce.
The Sacramento area jobless rate fell to 7.8 percent in May, down from a revised 8.2 percent in April, according to statistics released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.
The statewide jobless rate dipped to 8.6 percent last month, down from 9 percent in April, 9.4 percent in March and 10.7 percent a year earlier.

People exhausted their benefits, so they didn’t file for unemployment and the unemployment rate drops dramatically! Voila! An 0bama recovery!
Lies! People are falling off the rolls because they have expended the benefits and/or are now claiming disability which also takes them off the rolls.

Unemployment benefits are not how they calculate the unemployment rate.
High numbers on disability will affect the unemployment rate because they are no longer counted in labor pool. Same for early retirees.

The job market is booming in Silicon Valley. We have a lot of open reqs at my company and we can’t find good candidates. My son just graduated with a business degree and one or two companies are finding him on LinkedIn every day and asking him to interview for entry-level positions. One of his closest friends just graduated with a computer science degree and converted his internship at Apple into a full-time job with an outstanding salary. If you can put up with the impossible cost of living, give up ever owning a home, and can tolerate living in liberal la-la land, there’s a huge amount of work here. (our town starts its ban on shopping bags next week — you’re supposed to bring your own or pay a dime each for regular old brown paper shopping bags).
Yeah, that’s what I was saying.
We have more than 10 million people now on disability nationally. We have increased from 8 to 10 million in the last few years since I have been paying attention to that number. I am sure that some of that increase can be accounted for in the “graying” of our population. However, a good chunk of it is people just taking advantage of the system and liberal Obama appointees doing what they can to encourage the dependency state. They kill two birds with one stone. They create more potential dem voters and decrease official unemployment stats.
So, all these employment stats are lies, just like almost everything claimed by this administration.
California tax revenues are increasing. People don’t volunteer to pay more taxes. It comes from increased income, usually.
This is the measure I look at.
Gee. Employment is up in the state capitol, Sacramento. And the Washington, D.C. area is booming. What do they have in common?
Just the Mexicans.
If there is any truth to this report, it must be that people are taking part-time employment, even two part-time jobs because there is nothing else.
Is part-time employment considered “employment”?
Yes, it is counted as a job, same as a full time job.
Two part time jobs is counted as two jobs.
Most definitely.
And as more "29ers" are created every day to avoid paying Obamacare benefits, the statistical unemployment ranks will fall.
Oh good now they can increase the benefits for government workers and start spending again! WHEW, that was hard. I know, now they can raise taxes because everything is normal again.
My neighbor is a geologist and has been out of steady work for several years. He just got a job at Lowe’s. His wife also took a part time job.
Didn’t CA recently raise taxes and fees?
