Huge Crowds Turn Out in Egypt in Largely Peaceful Protests Against Morsi
McClatchy ^ | Sunday, June 30, 2013 | Nancy A. Youssef

In highly anticipated protests to mark the first anniversary of President Mohammed Morsi’s inauguration, millions of Egyptians took to the streets across the country in unprecedented numbers Sunday to demand his removal from office, three years before his term expires.

The protests were largely peaceful after days of worries that they would unleash violence between pro- and anti-Morsi camps. But in those places where they came together, the two sides kept their distance, with Morsi’s supporters vastly outnumbered by the president’s opponents.

This normally bustling city set aside its usual business what in Egypt is the first day of the work week as seas of protesters flocked to Tahrir Square and the presidential palace in scenes repeated across the country. Chants, honking and cheers could be heard at every corner. Local news channels here showed as many as 16 split screens of ongoing protests across the country.

As the day’s sweltering summer heat broke with sunset, the crowds only grew, and by nightfall, the numbers nationwide appeared to have surpassed those of 2011, when 18 days of demonstrations led to the fall of former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak.

“Ir-hal, Ir-hal,” they chanted – the Arabic word for ‘Leave’ – so loud that it could be heard far from the actual demonstration. Many carried the Egyptian flag, red, white and black punctuation to the crowds.

It was uncertain that the peaceful nature of the protests would hold. A crowd threw Molotov cocktails at the Cairo headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood, the secretive religious group through which Morsi rose to prominence, and there were reports that Brotherhood supporters inside responded with fire from pellet guns. Two provincial Brotherhood offices also were reported burned, and one person was killed in Beni Suef, 75 miles south of Cairo.

“Nice sofa. I always take a sofa to a protest.”

It’s what’s known as the “the couch party” as in low info/energy voters.

They signed the petitions as part of 22 million!

The estimates from Egypt are that 17 million marched today and I can’t claim that the balance would be 5million couchies!

the Egyptians, French, Iranians, Greeks, Turks etc all have more balls than most Americans today.

They get out there and protest, how about us protesting in our mullions in DC and to SCOTUS after their homosexual activism , , saying that it seems more Americans care about who dateswho in sports or Holywood

The flames kindled on the Fourth of July, 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume these engines and all who work them.

"...millions of Egyptians took to the streets across the country in unprecedented numbers Sunday to demand his removal from office, three years before his term expires."

What the HELL is the matter with us??

Millions upon millions of us are foaming at the mouth angry about what the wanna-be dictator is doing to our country, and we can't seem to get anything near that level of protest going.

Grrrrrr.......

"Tamarod in Alittihad platforms gives #Morsi 3 days to call for new election or face complete civil disobedience"

Come on, Americans. Why can't we do this?

Molesting women, especially Western women is one of the main reasons these zombie Muslim thugs come to the square in the first place. Jihad and violence aside, they are there hoping to “cop a feel” of some poor lady out there with the guys on the street. These young men are like packs of Hyenas looking for pray. Yeah, yeah down with Morsi and hey, Abed, see any Zionist Pig White Women?
These masses deserve to fall into the Nile forever...

Difference between US population and Egyptian?

Americans just finished that Porterhouse steak, pound of fries and plate of coleslaw and 72 ounce Mountain Dew.
Egyptian? Pita bread with some beans and hommous.

One population is sated, the other, not...

Thanks Norm. Having not been there, I agree with your take on it. I felt like I was living through a nightmare when Carter was president. This is even worse.

It would be hard to imagine a worse choice for president than this guy.
