Egypt's Foreign Minister: There Was No Military Coup

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr on Thursday told his American counterpart John Kerry that the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi had not been a military coup.

"The American side is a strategic partner for Egypt and the welfare of the Egypt is important to them," said Amr in a telephone call with Kerry, one day after Egypt's army ousted and detained Morsi, after a week of deadly clashes and mass protests calling for him to go.

"I hope that they read the situation in the right way, that this is not a military coup in any way. This was actually the overwhelming will of the people," Amr said. A military overthrow of an elected leader entails economic sanctions and could result in the U.S. cutting off its aid to Egypt.

Amr said that Kerry had assured him that Egypt was a strategic ally whose stability was important.

He added that the move was driven by the massive popular demonstrations against Morsi which had persuaded the armed forces to intervene and suspend the constitution.

"There is no role, no political role whatsoever, for the military ... This is the total opposite of a military coup," said Amr, who resigned from his position amid the protests earlier this week but who remains in office until a new interim government is formed.

Kerry: So it was a civilian coup sort of helped along by lots and lots of soldiers, who later picked out the civilians whose coup it is. OK. Here’s a nice big check for you.

This is the total opposite of a military coup,

LOL. I have a cartoon bubble where everyone is walking backwards.

Yesterday the military picked Morsi up at his house drove him to the office and ENDORSED the Constitution.

Come on...I can’t imagine any country we previously had a decent relationship with telling the obama regime so much as ‘the sky is blue’.

... Egypt's army ousted and detained Morsi...

Well, what else would you call it besides a military coup? Maybe a military "takeover?"

Doesn't a military coup (or "takeover") reesult in a member of the military assuming the head of government?

The military does not want to run the country’s day to day business. They just want their power and privelege.

They would be happy with carrot top as the leader. They could blame everything on him.

Or installing a head of state, one selected by the military, which I would think is the case in Egypt.

I would think that after five years of the illegal alien terrorist muslim the answer would be obvious. Our military seems to have lost sight of what they have sworn to uphold.

I heard on the Beeb that Mansour is the next in succession per the (suspended) constitution. So, I guess it is semi-legit, in a way.

For me, when it deals with setting back the Islamists, I am full on with those ends justifying the means.

Read this article by Spengler:

Nearly half of Egyptians are illiterate. Seventy percent of them live on the land, yet the country imports half its food. Its only cash-earning industry, namely tourism, is in ruins. Sixty years of military dictatorship have left it with college graduates unfit for the world market, and a few t-shirt factories turning Asian polyester into cut-rate exports. It cannot feed itself and it cannot earn enough to feed itself, as I have explained in a series of recent articles. Someone has to subsidize them, or a lot of them will starve. Unlike Mexico, Egypt can’t ship its rural poor to industrial nations in the north.
