Is the Zimmerman Case Really Open and Shut?
Front Page ^ | 7/5/13 | David Horowitz

Is the Zimmerman case really open and shut?

Many conservatives seem to think so. But are they letting leftists dictate their conclusion? Are they not guilty of the same rush to judgment that made liberals convict Zimmerman before the facts, and merely reacting to that injustice rather than to the actual elements of the case? Is it not possible that they are themselves victims of a toxic environment that polarizes all things racial?

It is a fact that many, if not most conservatives have already concluded that George Zimmerman is innocent of any crime in connection with Trayvon Martin’s death and should be acquitted if justice is to be served. Indeed, this opinion was formed long before the trial began as a reaction to the outcry of liberals that Zimmerman was guilty — and guilty of being white – and that the crime was murder, and must be punished. But just because a lynch mob has formed to condemn Zimmerman in advance of the facts, does not mean one must conclude that Zimmerman is innocent of Trayvon Martin’s death.

The political melodrama that surrounds, and often overwhelms the judgments in this case reflects a culture war that has been roiling in this country for decades. It is a war in which the liberal ethos of “political correctness” requires that whites are bad and blacks are victims. Right-thinking individuals are justified in rejecting this poisonous standard. But in the interests of justice, the political melodrama should also not be allowed to obscure the reality of this trial: it is about the death of an unarmed 17-year-old, who was not a felon, who was on a neighborhood run to get Skittles, and whose life has been extinguished. Given that the young man was unarmed and that he inflicted very superficial injuries on

“Trayvon jumping out of the bushes to attack him — because those bushes don’t exist”

If you have a chance to read through the comments on the Horowitz site (and there’s a lot of them, and the pertinent one is pretty far down the string), there’s a fellow who very calmly and very methodically provides a refutation of Horowitz’s three main claims against Zimmerman - and that includes the bushes claim.

Horowitz has shown a lot of guts over a long period of time on a number of contentious issues, and in those, he’s been a powerful ally to the right. I think he’s dead wrong on this one, and I was sorry to see his take on the Zimmerman case.

But he is right in saying that the right has to be careful about automatically marching in lockstep on the matter. A contrarian take from someone like him did force me to think more deeply about the matter - and did persuade me to read the comments that followed his screed. And then in reading those comments it became even more clear that Zimmerman is getting railroaded.

I hope Horowitz watches the entire defense presentation. I still think he’s basically intellectually honest - I’ll be curious to see if he walks back his take on this stuff once all the evidence is in.

Yeah, I was wondering about that because when Rachel told him to run, she said that he said he was near his daddy’s house.

If he was close to home and not circling back on GZ, I think he would be alive now.

West and O’Mara are going to so dismantle the state’s case with their own that anyone thinking of looting will be too busy nursing their wounds to come out of their holes.

Here is GZ reenactment for Sanford PD. Around the 9 minute mark you can see the area of the crime

These jurors won’t be able to pull a Nelson and just announce their decision.

They will have to give reasons for their decision and if the reason that they give is that they are afraid of riots then they will be dismissed and the alternate appointed because they are required to consider only that evidence presented in court — and fear of rioting was not presented in the court.

Horowitz lost credibility when he brought up “Stand Your Ground.”

Yeah, he's factually challenged, like Savage and the gun safety crap.

Some people feel like they are entitled to comment on issues without studying them. Perhaps they are. Just as we are entitled to roll our eyes and discount their ignorant opinions.

From Horowitz:

“Trayvon jumping out of the bushes to attack him — because those bushes don’t exist.”

comment from post by “Sasquatch” addressing the Horowitz piece:

“Let me now address a couple of the errors in this article, or possible errors:

“1.) The bushes do exist, David. There are bushes alongside the houses in that dog walk area, and Zimmerman never expressed certainty that Trayvon had been using them to hide. If you look at the totality of his first few statements, all within 24 hours of the incident, it is clear that when he initially mentioned bushes, this was his attempt to make sense of where this person had come from. He at that time wasn’t aware of the likelihood that Trayvon got home and came back to attack. He was called out to from behind, and turned to see Trayvon there. He was trying to make sense of how Trayvon had suddenly reappeared, and suggested the bushes as a possibility. Never did he say he was certain of it, and at the on scene walkthrough he made it clear it was merely the “darkness” that Trayvon had emerged from. So you’re doubly wrong on this, bushes were there, and he wasn’t firm on them anyway. It was him attempting to explain something to police.”

What we do know is that a young man who was unarmed and guiltless of any crime is dead.

What in hell do you call assault with intent to kill?

Lately the only thing the Press seems to do is inflame the public. The final result may be a manslaughter agreement with a 5 year sentence with good behavior, then wait till things cool off, and let him go. This is not a 1st Degree case, nor is it a 2nd degree case, it should have been a manslaughter case if anything. Trayvon’s mom is more interested in the $$$$$, than the loss of a son that she didn’t raise properly. LOL, if Zimmerman wins, Trayvon’s mom will immediately transfer her funds to a Bahama bank. Oh the irony of it all.

Given that the young man was unarmed and that he inflicted very superficial injuries on his adversary during their scuffle, Zimmerman’s claim that he was in fear for his life has to be taken with a grain of salt, to say the least.

Let me punch you in the face and break your nose, @$$hat, then write another article talking about superficial injuries....

Too bad Horowitz decided to weigh in on something he knows so little about.

He has hurt his reputation here.

And he’s slandering conservatives by suggesting they are mindlessly supporting Zimmerman.

The mindlessness is on the other side.

All sorts of suppositions and theorizing and could haves and possiblys might line up on on the other side, but that’s not what a trial is about.

Zimmerman is innocent in a court of law until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

The state’s case - in that regard which is the only one that counts - is an unmitigated disaster.

Horowitz is preparing for pro-bono appeal of GZ. (BTW, he only handles appeals.)

I am not sure what you mean. David Horowitz is not an attorney.

She did trademark her son’s name.

there’s a fellow who very calmly and very methodically provides a refutation of Horowitz’s three main claims against Zimmerman

What's name did he post under? Either repost his Frontpage post here (properly crediting him and Frontpage), or just post his screen name and if I agree with your assessment, I'll do it.

Horowitz is obviously bothered by the death of Trayvon Martin

The formational event of David Horowitz's political identity was the "civil rights movement".

He goes on and on about it, he is very defensive if challenged, and he will not permit any views contrary to his idealization of it.
