NO RICK PERRY RUN IN 2014, BUT MAYBE IN 2015
Powerline ^ | 07/08/2013 | BY PAUL MIRENGOFF

Posted on 07/08/2013 7:30:21 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Rick Perry has announced that he will not seek reelection in 2014. When he leaves office, Perry will have served as governor of Texas for 13 years (the longest such tenure ever, I believe) and, as John Fund notes, he has a fine record. Perry kept taxes low and business regulation reasonable, and it is no coincidence that approximately 30 percent of new private-sector job creation during the last decade occurred in Texas.

Perry will also be remembered for his extremely weak run for the presidency. His lack of fluency and failure to remember his own talking points cost him dearly. Aside from that, his momentum stalled when Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum attacked him from the right on immigration issues.

Perry didn’t favor of amnesty or a path to citizenship. He was attacked from the right for supporting interstate tuition rates to the children of illegal immigrants and for opposing a 2,000 mile fence (he wanted to put more “boots on the ground” and the use more “aviation assets”).

Perry’s vulnerability for taking these fairly mild immigration stances can provide a lesson to Republicans running for office in conservative jurisdictions.

Perry has not ruled out another run for president. Clearly, he would have to demonstrate quite forcefully that he’s not the same debater we saw in 2011.

In addition, Perry is less of a conservative favorite these days. In 2012, he supported the bid of his lieutenant governor for the Senate against Ted Cruz, the new conservative favorite.

Things are brighter for Perry on the immigration front, though. With so many potential Republican presidential contenders now supporting amnesty, Perry would not be stranded on the left on immigration. In fact, he could get to the right of much of the field by not supporting amnesty (to my knowledge, he hasn’t taken a position on the Senate legislation).

Perry would also win points for his pro-life stance. Under his leadership, the state legislature is on the verge of restricting late-term abortions.

But most of the 2016 Republican field will have solid pro-life credentials. So if a strong anti-amnesty conservative — Cruz, for example — enters the race, it’s difficult to identify Perry’s niche.

He wouldn’t be the establishment’s candidate; nor would he be the top choice of hard-core conservatives. His prospects would therefore be dim, even if he were able to show that he’s an able debater/campaigner.

Right, pinging your buddies is called calling in the harpies around here. It means you can't handle something on your own and need your buddies to back you up.

I strongly disagree and I find your opinion on the matter to be immature and asinine.

We saw this during the primaries, and you guys are the reason we ended up with Romney as our candidate

Perry was AWFUL as a candidate and blew his chance all by himself.

I strongly suspect you are Romney supporters hiding out as "conservatives".

You're wrong but I find it assuming that every Perrybot and Newtbot accuses anyone who doesn't like Romney's FELLOW RINOS NEWT AND PERRY of being Romneybots. You can stick it pal. None of the those "harpies" I pinged are Romney fans either, one actually is most anti-Romney person I've ever seen. Thing is though they don't like OTHER RINOS EITHER so they won't heap praise on Ricky just he was running against Romney.

I backed Santorum, I wasn't thrilled with him but he was the least objectionable by far and the only Romney opponent who actually had a chance once the voting got going. Gun to my head I'd choose Perry over Myth but Perry crapped out early as you may recall and threw his support behind the odious RINO Newt who I think might be even worse than Romney. You can thank Gingrich supporters for splitting the anti-Romney vote and guaranteeing a Romney win. Of course their line was "Santorum is a Romney plant", that seems to be the standard line of attack. Big load of crap.

Captain Gardasil ? La Raza Rick ? Whut ? Sorry, Mickey, but he should’ve been out on his butt a decade ago. That Texas has blustery Jimmuh Carter-supporting RINO blowhards occupying the Governorship and rich liberal country-clubbers like DewCrist in the #2 slot is disgusting.

As for being a Willard supporter, I kindly invite you to review ALL my thousands of posts going back to 2005/06 on the subject. If you can find ONE where I ever endorsed him, you go ahead and post it right here in this thread. I wouldn’t vote for that Socialist fraud and Zero ringer in 10,000 years and I spent day and night exposing him and his despicable left-wing record. I voted for Virgil Goode for President in 2012.

I’ve been here since 1998, too. October 31st, 1998 to be precise. It was a Saturday. The first day I got the internet with a high-speed cable.

OMG you guys are too funny! The fact that Texas is thriving while the rest of the country withers doesn't seem to bother you at all. The governor of Texas has gone all over the country getting businesses to move to Texas and the people of Texas are prospering but you're hatred of Perry shows that you are democrat operatives. No two ways about it. If you were conservatives, taxes, jobs, abortion, morality, would all mean something to you. The fact that it doesn't tells me, and anyone reading, exactly what you guys are.

The fact that you run in packs like a bunch of teenage boys should tell people all they need to know about you "conservatives" LOL

Texas has flourished in spite of that phony, opportunistic buffoon, not because of him. Seriously, do you have a little picture of La Raza Rick that you worship at ?

Conservatives don’t force little girls to get HPV vaccines, thereby bypassing parental rights (all the while the manufacturer of said vaccine was a big booster of Perry — more crony capitalism).

Conservatives don’t build massive highways through a state to speed up an illegal invasion throughout the United States.

Conservatives don’t go to racist organizations like La Raza and pander to their extremist agenda.

For you to claim Ricky as the paragon of Conservative virtue is an insult to anyone with an iota of intelligence. Ricky has been an opportunist all his life, a Democrat when it suited him, supporting both Jimmy Carter and was Al Gore’s TX campaign manager for President, and a Republican when the Democrats crumbled in TX, personally recruited by that turdpile leftist Trojan horse Karl Rove. A slick phony that runs a dime a dozen south of the Mason-Dixon line. I’ve seen his kind most of my life, though most had the common courtesy to remain Democrats.

BTW, I’m still waiting for those posts you claim I made supporting Slick Willard for all these years. Where are they, Mac ? Put up or shut up.

McGavin999:

I don't have big problems with Rick Perry. I also don't live in Texas. I have an adult daughter in Texas who is somewhat to my Right on several issues like Gardasil who would not vote for Perry for ANY office any more than I would vote for Senator Nancyboy Kirk or Mushmouth Mittler GOP-E Romney. I would have voted for Perry for POTUS against Obozo. Romney??? NEVER!

Perry has generally championed the pro-life cause and enacted effective legislation on that front. He has certainly kept taxes down, avoided regulation mania, been a solid pro-gun guy, is a practicing Christian of a conservative persuasion.

OTOH, he lacks discipline in public speaking and a sense of effective outreach to those not already in the choir. I think, but am not yet totally convinced, that he would be trustworthy on judges. I think he has an unfortunate weakness for the GOP-E as evidenced by his support for Dewhurst over Cruz. I like him as a personality and he briefly rose to flavor of the week before forgetting his own talking points.

In short, it is important to recognize his good points honestly but national enthusiasm is somewhat unlikely.

You call those of us who ping each other to threads like this "harpies." You would be surprised at the differences among us although the "harpies" agree on much. On an individual basis, sometimes we respond and sometimes we don't.

No one is looking to gang up on you here. You have as much right to your opinions and insights and to voice them as each of us have. Sometimes, we individually may agree with you and sometimes not. Don't be offended in the latter case.

Oh, and BTW, I cannot imagine that Fieldmarshaldj EVER supported Romney any more than I did. Facts are facts.

“I think, but am not yet totally convinced, that he would be trustworthy on judges.”

No, Perry is not trustworthy in that regard, either. I exposed him back in 2011 on his appointment of Xavier Rodriguez to the state Supreme Court, a La Raza pander if there ever was one...

fieldmarshaldj,
Please help me out here. I wasn't a Perry supporter in 2012 and I am still trying to figure out who to support in 2016. My question is...is this all there is against Rick Perry?

I wasted the 2008 primary waiting for Fred and I wasted 2012 waiting for Sarah. No candidate is going to have 100% purity. Even Ronald Reagan had his skeletons from his governorship of California. If this is the worst there is against Perry, I almost wish I had picked him in 2012!

I would appreciate anyone's input.

Is this all what is ? I expect the person I elect to be President to be trustworthy and to share my values. Plainly put, Perry doesn’t. He went out of his way to decry people like me, tens of millions of Americans of all races, as “heartless” for wanting the border secure and illegals sent home.

Because the border remains as porous as can be, thanks to BOTH parties’ leaders (Zero & Dubya), it has had a negative impact on my life (right up to being an audio witness to two attempted murders by an illegal neighbor). Anyone who would dare insult me to my face on that would be wearing a truss for the rest of their natural life, and they sure as hell would never get my vote for dogcatcher.

RE :”He went out of his way to decry people like me, tens of millions of Americans of all races, as “heartless” for wanting the border secure and illegals sent home.”

That exchange was about giving in-state tuition rate discounts to illegals in college and not about the border, or even specifically deportation.

Except that is precisely what he meant, and the issue isn’t mutually exclusive. He went pandering to La Raza from the get-go. His credibility on the subject of the border has always been highly questionable.

I wasnt defending him or attacking him, just clarifying. One could make the case that in-state tuition is even worse.

You really think we are going to get out of this without people in the streets? Texas will be its own country again before this mess ends.

But Josh Brolin would not need as much makeup to play him in the movie.

I think that’s what I was hinting at. We need a governor of a large state to lead the way, and it seemed that Perry was aware it might come to that. He mentioned secession a few times.

Its seems over the past few months I’ve come to realization that what we are hinting cannot remain unspoken much further.

I recall how stunned I was when I saw someone mention an American Coup d’etat here. I thought, “Wow, it hasnt come to THAT has it?”

While I don’t advocate it. I am seeing it written about more and more. And it scares me a little bit.

So, I am going fishing.

RINO apologists always go on about “purity”.

WHO’S ASKING FOR PURITY? I’ll settle for decency.

In what, “The Rick Perry Story”? Boy, that would be a boring movie. You’d have to add some fictional “Dallas” type storylines to get anyone to watch it.
