Obama: Honor Trayvon Martin by battling gun violence

President Obama called on the nation to honor Trayvon Martin a day after George Zimmerman was acquitted of his murder by asking "ourselves if we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence."

His comments came as family members of Zimmerman and Martin, as well as pundits, celebrities, and court observers had strong reactions to Saturday’s not guilty verdict, with those reactions taking various forms — from joy and outrage to Shakespearean references and calls for peace.

"I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities," Obama said in a statement on Sunday.

"We should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that's a job for all of us. That's the way to honor Trayvon Martin."

Well we all knew this would be coming.

Why would anyone want to honor a thug who was killed while in the commission of a crime?

I’m going to honor George Zimmerman by buying more ammo and going to the range to practice.

You can start with the south side of Chicago.

Because he was a shining moral paragon of virtue and wisdom, and definitely not just a convenient pawn to use for ideological purposes.

Thugs like Martin are the reason why people have to resort to “gun violence”.

Gun violence is almost non-existent in the white communities across the country

maybe “do you know where your kids are? “ campaign.....
and read your kids Facebook/twitter messages.... you are the parent - you need to be in charge. Sure, it’s a tough, unpopular job sometimes, but that’s what they’ll thank you for later!

left to their own devices, youngsters make bad choices.

if gz was murdered by trayvon, which he verbally said he was going to do, then trayvon would have been in court, charged with murder, as an adult.

and not worshipped as a saint by libtards.

Why “honor” Trayvon? Feel bad that he is dead, of course. Feel awful for his parents, yes. But “honor”? This is a kid who was suspended from school for being in possession of stolen property. Mourn yes, honor, no.

How about honoring our country and the Constitution. Tired of thuggish race baiters looking for an excuse to pillage, beat, and plunder.

Don’t be distracted. The Federal government is going to use sleight of hand, to keep our attention focussed on riots and demonstrations like the ones in Oakland, San Francisco and elsewhere, to try and give Boehner and Cantor breathing room to force amnesty for illegal aliens down our throats. DON’T LET THEM DO THIS!!

I don't get it. Trayvon Martin is dead an 0bama is not.

All the gun violence is coming from the gang bangers protecting their turf in the illegal drug war and those drug crazed enough to shoot or assault others. And, thugs like Trayvon Martin who want to discourage volunteers who watch their neighborhoods from law-breakers. Travon Martin would not have been out casing the housing units if he had no need to fund his pusher inventory. I am sure he was after stolen goods to raise capital for a drug purchase. We are familiar with the stolen loot found in his backpack at school. Like his fellow gang bangers, he was protecting his turf from Zimmerman’s neighborhood watch restricting his access.

Oops! I saw “honor a thug” and “commission of a crime” and let the caveat “was killed” slip my mind. Time for bed. :(

Well, I’m not concerned. I voted to legalize pot here in CO.
