Liberals you should be ashamed of yourselves for the misery and destruction you have forced on Detroit. Because of liberal policies Detroit, an American city that once was the very epitome of the benefits of capitalism, was once able to boast of the highest standard of living of any city in the world is now little more than a garbage heap people want to run from.
Today Detroit has roughly 700,000 people. In 1960 Detroit had 1.6 million people. They were auto workers and auto manufacturing executives. They manufactured things and traded an honest day’s work for a decent middle class salary. Then you took over, liberals. In 1962 the last Republican mayor left office. Your greedy unions swamped Detroit and all of a sudden every demand from every group was met. The debt you caused and the criminals you elected to run Detroit sacked the town like the Vandals who picked Ancient Rome clean.
Detroit’s takers have finally overwhelmed its dwindling number makers and it has forced the Motor City into bankruptcy. The end of Detroit has started and ALL of Detroit’s problems are directly your fault. You liberals got everything you wanted. You got an all Democrat city government that meant crooked mayors crooked police a crooked city council and the worst school system in America actually run by a former Detroit special education student.
At first as long as a politician was a Democrat you backed him. You inflicted Coleman Young on an unsuspecting city that still believed it could be saved by the music industry even as auto manufacturers ran away from your greedy unions. Young was an unabashed Black racist whose administration was purposely designed to make White Detroiters run away as fast as they could; and they did. Thereafter just being a Democrat was no longer enough and the new standard meant only Black Democrats could run your city and together both of you destroyed Detroit.
Next your paternalist attitude inflicted Kwame Kilpatrick, an out and out street thug, on what was left of Detroit. He is now in prison for corruption and tax evasion but he should have been tried for ordering the execution style murder of a stripper named Tamara Green. You liberals covered for him and made the investigation of her death “disappear.”
Now you liberals will wring your hands and make up excuses for your city’s incompetent administration because “after all Detroit is run by Blacks so it cannot be criticized.”
Shame on you liberals; you inflicted every one of your stupid dreams on a middle class city, destroyed it and ran away. Detroit is as good a reason as any to pledge to defeat you at every opportunity. The “good” you do lasts until other people’s money runs out; the damage you do is forever.

If people keep arguing and believing that "big greedy business" did it, then there is no hope for America. "Voters" will keep on electing the same old destroyers...and destroyers do what they do...destroy.
The lesson that should be learned from this is to start, from the next elections, installing people into positions of power who know at least economics 101a. Otherwise, the big cities will fall like dominoes into rack and ruin..
To be fair, a good deal of Detroit's prosperity was based on a tacit agreement between the car companies and the UAW to plunder the American public.
The car companies caved in to UAW demands and passed on the costs to the customer, and also produced sub-standard cars. Worked fine as long as Americans had no other cars to buy.
Then we discovered that Japan and other countries produced better cars at lower prices, and the conspiracy to defraud the American public fell apart.
It's easy to be prosperous if you have a monopoly on a necessary product. But only as long as you can maintain your monopoly.

They can’t because they’re mentally diseased. Liberalism is a chronic, no-cure mental disease that rots out the brain’s ability to reason. It’s a sickness.
Detroit is the result of years of mental sickness. Liberals did it and liberals now own it...period. Obama should be proud of his minions....much like Mugabe.

What you say is all well and good; however, how could this city now look like a Hooverville?
Do you think it’s because of the tractor revolution in the South where cotton pickers were no longer needed and the pickers made it up to Dee-troit where the streets were thought to be paved with gold?
It takes deliberation to completely ruin neighborhoods that were once the workers’ pride and glory.
Traitorous liberals (aka Demonrats) love evil and hate the United States, so they feel no shame for wrecking Detroit. Their own socially redeeming value is to be tried and convicted for treason and to provide rope makers with employment.
This will go in one ear and out the other with libs. Unless an explanation of failure begins with “due to racism/capitalism/lack of funding/Republicans, they are incapable of hearing it.
Not disagreeing with the main thrust of the article. Only pointing out that the free market in cars had a lot to do with the city’s collapse.
Many other cities lost their main industries and reinvented themselves doing something else.
Detroit lost their industry and didn’t replace it with anything. No base means the government crumbles.
The Democrat party.....a culture of thievery, arrogance and incompetence.
Well, Unions had a big hand in destroying Detroit too. With liberal enablers, Unions just kept ratcheting up the benefit scale to the point where they were extorting money from the industries in Detroit.
Industry did what was natural, out source to cheap labor elsewhere in order to maintain competitiveness, draining jobs and driving people who actually want to work for a living away, while those on the public dole stayed and increased the burdens of the city.
Liberals, not wanting to lose their constituencies kept the money flowing in wages, benefits and compensation to city workers and subsistence recipients while hiding the problems so that they remained unimpeded by reality.
So now we see what the eventual demise of big liberal city bastions is going to look like. California will eventually experience the same problems. More and more quality entertainment is being outsourced to Canada, so even Hollywood isn’t immune.
Kick out all the politicians in Detroit, take all the illegal aliens that Obama wants to grant amnesty to and just give them Detroit.
“Shame” is not a word found in liberals’ vocabulary. Nor are: conscience, truth, facts, honesty, virtue, integrity, humility, responsibility, accountability.
Just as bad is the fact of the suffering from the legacy the late Mayor Coleman Young, who effectively drove all the productive people out of town (regardless of race) and reduced the city to a decayed ruin that in many parts reminds us of Mogadishu in Somalia currently! There is effectively no hope for the 700,000 people remaining, and that may drop to under 500,000 in a few years at the rate things are going.
In the end, besides the Chapter 9 bankruptcy, I personally think the following needs to be done to Detroit:
1. Raze every crumbling building in the city.
2. Reduce the physical size of the Detroit city limits to something much smaller, and the remain areas subdivided into smaller, manageable towns.
3. Get rid of the current city government and have it directly managed from the Michigan state capital for the next 4-5 years.
4. Turn all of Wayne County into a permanent enterprise zone and focus its economic base away from the automobile industry and towards trade between the USA and Canada per NAFTA agreements. After all, a huge fraction of the goods trade between Canada and Detroit goes through Detroit now anyway.
5. Build a second highway crossing between Detroit and Windsor, ON that directly connects Interstates 94 and 75 on the Detroit side and Ontario Highway 401 (the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) on the Windsor side. This will expedite goods trade between Detroit and Windsor and end the bottleneck of the Ambassador Bridge between the two cities.
