...but I’d much rather have had the thief caught and potentially changed than killed.

It may be desirable for individuals who are thieves to get rehabilitated, but it is more important for individuals who are prospective thieves to believe that actually becoming a thief would be a really really bad idea. If someone whose life is bad think that the worst outcome for a thief would be getting caught and rehabilitated, and maybe ending up with a better life as a result, what should such a person do?

Liberals deliberately ignore cause-and-effect relationships. Conservatives try to pay them heed, but unfortunately still fail to adequately consider many of them.
