The narrative here would seem to be that Obama is dumb and doesnt even know basic geography. But no one really believes that and even Obamas most ardent critics have never questioned his intelligence. Instead of the hapless dunce in the mold of liberals anti-Bush caricatures, conservatives see Obama as a conniving radical. Or an out-of-touch, former law professor, ivory tower elitist. Either way, not dumb. Ted Cruz said today that he modeled his campaign after Obamas because it was so smart and effective.
Meanwhile, downplaying the threat of terrorism is plainly not a gaffe its an assessment of the world that is different from how conservatives would see it. On the Olympics, Obama said, if Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track, or in the swimming pool, or on the balance beam. As Newsbusters nails him: The track and field events, swimming competitions and gymnastics all take place during the summer games. Sochi, Russia is the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. BOOM! Nailed him.
More troubling is that Obama said Putin headed up the KGB. Its a common misconception, but in fact the Russian president only rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from the spy agency to enter politics. That maybe suggests a lack of a specific bit of knowledge vaguely relevant to an important foreign policy issue, but its still not really a political gaffe.
As Tommy Christopher writes, Another reason that gaffes dont stick to this president is that, fair or not, they dont fit an established narrative for him. When John McCain refers to Czechoslovakia, its funny because hes old, and when Sarah Palin says North Korea is our ally, its funny because of her overbearing jingoism and perceived dimness.

“57 states? Yeah, hes a genius”
I remember when he got mad at the Republicans at some meeting and said that they were trying to make him call his own bluff. His own bluff? Probably had no time to play poker at Columbia to learn about who calls whose bluffs.
Listen to him hemming and hawing when he is without his teleprompter.
Or how about during the debate when Obozo claimed that businesses receive tax deduction for taking a plant overseas. I loved Romney’s response: “Listen, I’ve been in business for 25 years. I have no idea what you’re talking about. I maybe need to get a new accountant.” Obozo and his minions never proved Romney wrong, b/c they couldn’t.
The list is very long. Yet a lot of people with eyes and ears can’t see or hear.
Oh my goodness! This article is hilarious! I can’t believe anyone would think they would even need to write such a thing. Talk about thin-skinned.
Mmmm hmmm, sure this rings true /s
Every freaking day.
But when Bush is president, anything slightly off is a gaffe.
Allow me to summarize:
Whatever erroneous statements Obama has made are not important errors.
Maybe not stupid, but certainly not as smart as he thinks he is.
AA is what got him where he is, not his intelligence.
Sure, but he's also pretty typical of some White people who coast from prep school to the Ivy League and into law firms or college and foundation positions.
From the article:
But no one really believes that and even Obamas most ardent critics have never questioned his intelligence. Instead of the hapless dunce in the mold of liberals anti-Bush caricatures, conservatives see Obama as a conniving radical. Or an out-of-touch, former law professor, ivory tower elitist. Either way, not dumb.
It's silly to think that opponents (or supporters of politicians) have one universal and fixed image of their political love or hate objects. The prevailing images fasten on something about the politician, but usually have as much to say about the critics (or fans) and where they're coming from.
From the "Austrian language" gaffe on, it was pretty clear that Obama, like many members of his generation in high positions didn't have much grasp of geography or history. That didn't necessarily mean he was stupid, but he wasn't as educated as his fans thought he was. Obama had the polished surface of an Ivy League graduate, but he never struck me as independent-minded or a deep thinker or especially reflective.
The left excels at recognizing the need to defend the FIRST AFFIRMATIVE ACTION president. THE FOREIGNER doesn’t know the U.S. geography because he’s not from the U.S.. Ask him about Indonesia. That’s where he studied geography.
He was raised and influenced by marxists and that is how he thinks. How did America elect a person who doesn’t know how many states we have and what cities are located on the Gulf Coast? And listen to him without his teleprompter. He is stupid. He was elected because of the color of his skin. If he was white, he’d be unemployed.
Very insightful letter. I hope you sent it.
Well Alex, with 57 states you never know.
Own it you idiot, Bronco is a complete socialist dumbass.
Ignore the man behind the curtain!
Only a D student would hide his grades.
Clearly Salon itself did not use the definition stated in this article with Bush, that is, that a gaffe is “revealing truths that you weren’t supposed to reveal.”
In this article http://www.salon.com/2000/09/15/bush_71/ they stated, “Then Bush fell prey to a series of gaffes one in which he called a New York Times reporter an asshole...”
OR, maybe Salon thinks this NYT reporter really IS an asshole, but Bush wasn’t supposed to reveal that secret.
It is no occident that we have not seen his grades.
Well I do!
"I want to see his LSAT scores"
I want to see his SAT scores and his undergraduate college transcripts. They leaked George Bush's grades and test scores (and they weren't bad). Obama's are more carefully guarded than the gold in Fort Knox.
Does anyone really think that if Obamas's weren't embarrassingly awful, they wouldn't have leaked them?
I wondered how far down it would be before this was challenged.
The guy is dumber than a brick.
He has the intelligence, personality and African-Caucasian makeup to do exactly what he is doing, most of which is hidden from us.
And speaking of low intelligence, Salon is the most intellectually void political opinion blog/website I've ever read. Just empty sarcasm and demagoguery with no real thoughtful analysis. They actually blame the fall of Detroit on conservatives. Talk about factory preset libtard babble.

So the East Coast is on the Gulf?
If someone put it on his teleprompter and he read it, did he actually mean it?
We’re confusing terms here. There is smart, and there is wise; there is dull and there is ignorant and there is stupid. They are not all the same.
“Obama is dumb ... no one really believes that.”
Question-begging in the first sentence. Why do they even bother trying to defend him? Or to write at all?
Oh yeah, ‘cause their boy made a jacka$$ out of himself. Again. These people are primates.
Primates aren’t even this stupid. I mean, who do they think they’re fooling at this point?
Really..what the hell does that mean, they serve the Gulf??..they serve the gulf breakfast?!??!..after reading this tripe, one must ask the author, do you swallow or spit?!?!?
You will never see his college scores or enhance papers. The people who he has in his education department now got him in.
Cass Sunstein, Bill Ayers and others from the Annenberg Challenge arranged him getting into school with money from probably a big Muzzie donor.
Follow the money.
For starters, B-HO is mathematically challenged. His grammar is poor. He doesn’t know how many states this nation has. He knows very little history. What has he been doing over the years with this astoundingly high IQ the MSM has assigned to him?
For the first time in my life (61) I am smarter than my President.
And that's a scary thought!
Clearly, this guy never read FR threads.
That's correct, and why I never do that. But, Gore's grades *were* released, and Bush's were far better than his. The libs just gloss it over.
I’ve never seen a shred of evidence that Obama has anything more than an average intelligence if that. He’s not well-spoken, shows no sign of being well-read and fell for the idiocy of socialism. He’s a chump.
Okay, this person admits obama says totally wrong and/or stupid stuff.
Then he uses some kind of pretzel logic to make his point that:
Since obama’s considered intelligent by any and all who matter...his stupidity is okay.
When obama gets his “facts” partially right...his partial stupidity is okay.
And since his stupidity isn’t due to the fact that he’s a doddering old fool — but just has his facts wrong or partially wrong...it’s okay.
And finally, since obama’s not a dimwit like the one who exposes his evil plans for the US on an almost daily basis...it’s all okay!
And why bring up the “irrelevant” Sarah anyway?
They’re all finding out how right and relevant she’s been all along. That’s why.
Oh, he's dumb all right, but he's clever - he knows he can push and push and few will dare try to stop him, and he thinks he already knows everything he needs to know and won't be advised differently.
She got that right, but not the way she meant. Obama is an evil, bigoted, anti-American communist, but at least he is too lazy and stupid to do as much damage to the United States as a free country as he would like to inflict. I don't question his intelligence or his morals, not when he has consistently proven that both are negligible.
One can be conniving and radical and still not too bright. And one can become a professor and not be book smart if one never attended class and gets installed for political reasons.
But, Alex, you might want to check your own magazine before you start projecting. Yes, projecting. Bush was supposed to be the world’s biggest dunce (next to Palin, maybe) and yet (the story goes) he fooled everyone in the world about WMDs and everything else in the war and he was constantly misunderestimated.
I’m sure the Gulf must touch several of the 57 States. /S
Doesn't mean Obama is smart; frankly I haven't seen any real evidence of that contention. I think what Cruz meant was that the Obama campaign was smart, which means it was run by smart people, but that does not necessarily mean Obama.
On the contrary. THIS conservative sees obama as a DUMB conniving radical. Among other things ...
when Sarah Palin says North Korea is our ally, its funny because of her overbearing jingoism and perceived dimness.
"perceived dimness" that is manufactured and perpetuated by the lying media, just like George Bush's, Dan Quayle's, Gerald Ford's, or even Ronald Reagan's.
Stop pretending you aren't masters at manipulating images and admit that the sainted genius myth of barack obama is largely a media fiction. The guy is an idiot, a bungler, and an inepticon.
And don’t forget......OBAMA USED A TELEPROMPTER IN A KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM! THE EPITOMY OF STUPID!
...dumb as donuts, without a doubt. But, unfortunately, he’s a Cook County brass knuckles sleaze and corruption master and is implementing enough of his evil agenda.
Author Alex Seitz-Wald sure doesn’t read much beyond Salon and Daily Kos. But, with a surname of “Forest Rabbit,” what else would you expect?
Not much different than some ear nose and throat specialist giving a "guest lecture" on how to treat sinusitis to medical students.
We had these all the time in medical school. Specialists who would come in and tell us what we will see in practice.
Or for instance the chairman of the emergency department coming in and discussing interesting cases he's seen.
And let me assure you, they were fascinating.
But these were one-offs. They were not our regular professors.
Neither was Obama.
How COULD he be? Not like he had extensive extra training in law. Nor was he a member of the Faculty.
To become a professor takes years, sometimes decades to become a full professor.
Gotta earn it.
That's why they developed the infamous Journ-O-list; a collection of hundreds of journalists and pundits to serve as his backbenchers.
Obama gets another mulligan.
