North Texas prosecutors say a 37-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for serving as the ringleader of a group that stole more than 800 cell phones in a scheme that netted some $1.5 million.
A Tarrant County jury on Wednesday convicted Rashad Elqutob of a theft charge and for engaging in organized crime.
The Arlington man, originally from Kuwait, was an employee of AT&T who acquired a vast inventory of cell phones from AT&T, RadioShack and another company.
Other workers stole the phones and then sold them to Elqutob for about 10 percent of their value. Prosecutors say Elqutob then used business fronts to sell them on Ebay and Craigslist.
An investigation was launched when AT&T and RadioShack contacted authorities after discovering a large volume of missing phones.
The Amish are at it again!
The numbers don’t add up.
Considering how often cells are used to trigger IEDs in the MidEast, this does not give me a good feeling.
illegals or Muslims? or both?
To get $1.5M from 800 phones, they would have to sell for almost $2,000 each. I'm having a little trouble figuring that for "10 percent of their value". It must be nice to work as a journalist, where math is as unimportant as facts and grammar.
They should use the “driving safety” defense.
Sew him up in a pig carcass and air drop him on mecca along with all muooselimbs here. If you don’t like america leave. No one forces you to be here. Obey our laws but not like our politicians do.
Dont be too quick to blame the journalist for the math (except for not questioning the math).
The figures most likely came from a press kit generated by the police.
The numbers dont add up.
800+ phones and $1.5 million plus dollars.
Damn expensive phones using the numbers provided
These are the people Obamacare exempts
These are the people that immigration reform wants to bring in more of an legalize
Elk Tub? That alone would earn a conviction from me ;-)
Why was this person in our country?
That's $1875 per phone!
Are all free Obamaphones that vulnerable?
Something is missing from this story.
"Acquired?" It sounds as if they mean "stole" but how did he do that? And who is "another company?"
Innumeracy is rampant among the journalist class, for certain.
