Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt's Generals: 'How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?'
Foreign Policy ^ | 15 Aug 2013 | John Hudson

Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists.

"This is something that those who voted in Congress are going to have to live with," Paul told The Cable on Thursday. "The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?"

As the official Egyptian death toll climbs to 638, the legislation the Kentucky libertarian is referring to was an amendment to suspend aid to Egypt until the country holds free and fair elections. Two weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats rejected it by an overwhelming 86-13 vote -- and top lawmakers in both parties protested it loudly.

"This amendment may be good politics, but it is bad policy," Sen. Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said at the time.

"It would be a terrific mistake for the United States to send a message to Egypt: you're on your own," Republican Senator John McCain added back then. "I urge my colleagues to vote to table the Paul amendment."

The vote has already come back to haunt some lawmakers, such as McCain, who is now advocating a cancellation of aid to Egypt . . .

Have you read the Live Egypt thread?

Nope and I know better than waste my time on propaganda. You clowns are acting exactly the same way you did the first time you got it wrong and I was called all kinds of names then too.

If you clowns want a fight so bad, you should spend your own money and get over there and take care of business. Guess its just easier to leech off the taxpayers.

The MB are “anti-government activists”? So burning churches, cutting heads off, throwing people off buildings etc., etc. is now classified as “activism”? Got it.

“He’s taking the WRONG FREAKING SIDE”

It looks like you are the fool here.

Why the hell do you want to take sides in the Egyptian civil war?

Just please tell me how is any of this in the US interest.

Getting involved in this will only bring their civil war here. Just like it did before.

I’m far from being an isolationist and neither is Rand. But getting involved in these civil wars is just plain stupid. Nothing good will come out of it.

Okay, so you know more than anyone who pays close attention to Egyptian news for months and some who understand Arabic.

Apparently you’ve gone entirely nuts.

Rand is siding with the MB. Why didn’t he object to $ to Egypt when Morsi was pres? THe claim that military tanks are running over citizens is MB propagana. If he started in with “no $ for Egypt” when Morsi was in, then he might be taken seriously.

But he’s siding with Mozlem radicals, just like his Pa.

While I agree with crip about not funding them we do not need to stop funding now or for the reasons that they kicked morsi out and are killing mb and al qaeda terrorists. Those terrorists killed ONE HUNDRED POLICE ARMED ONLY WITH TEAR GAS... and the can of whupass that the Military has opened on them is deserved in spades. Kill them all boys and stack them like cord wood!

Mubarak was smart enough to refrain from random killing of a major portion of the population.

Who deposed Mubarak?

I don’t think he was so smart.

Read up on the history of the Brotherhood and you will be convinced that there will never be “peace” until the Caliphate.

The Paul family does not support aid to ANY nation.

Israel, England, Egypt, Jordon.....

There is no distinction.

“Why didn’t he object to $ to Egypt when Morsi was pres?”

He did DUmmy. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

Rand Paul is against giving taxpayer money to Egypt and he doesn’t care who is in power. Why the hell do you want to spend money killing civilians in Egypt? That makes no sense ar all. The muslim brotherhood is their problem.

Rand is a fool.

He knows nothing of what’s going on in Egypt. He’s as stupid as his stupid crazy father. He’s taking the WRONG FREAKING SIDE! His reason for not giving money to Egypt is because he thinks the miltiary is bad and the MB are the good guys.

Makes me want to puke.

Anyway, Putin’s helping Egypt now and el-Sisi won’t take 0bastard’s call, so US influence is over, anyway. The Egyptians know full well that 0bastard’s been supporting the Mozlem Brotherhood and the MB has a very narrow small support in Egypt.

////////////

You get it! Thank you for this post. Cuts to the heart of the matter.

Both Pauls have a gaping blind spot as regards any possible shortcomings of Islam and its followers.

Rush stated today that obama and his machine were active in electing morsi and sent money and political advisers... and election stealing goons.

Paul is saying to not fund Egypt because the evil military is killing MB.

He’s full of crap.

If he screamed “Defund all countries NOW” since he got elected that would be one thing. But he is specifically siding with nasty freaking evil jihadi MB and AQ.

Paul - like nutcase mozlem siding father, like nutcase mozlem siding son.

This is good... we need to see what these so called republican firebrand Conservatives do when the heat is on. So far... IMHO... I am not impressed by Rand.

Au contraire.

I suspect little jeremiah has more understanding of what is going on in Egypt that you do inside your entire cranium.

While your stated position: “No foreign aid whatsoever” is certainly a valid position, that HARDLY sounds like what Paul is articulating here (or else he has suddenly been overtaken by an unusual bout of inarticulateness).

Rand clearly refers to the (violently) rebellious MB elements in a sympathetic light: “The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?”

Either that, or he is woefully out of date and is referring to events following the original revolution of a year or so ago. Back then, the tanks were rolling over people and the tanks were being directed by MB sympathizers.

Either way, Rand does not appear in this instance to be articulating “No foreign aide ever.” He rather appears to be articulating “Big bad Government attacking poor, innocent, little (AK-carrying) MB Sympathizing bastards.

I trust both Pauls as far as i can throw them when it comes to understanding and/or wisely responding to Muslims or anything about them.
