Skip to comments.McCain/Romney Adviser Mike Murphy: Cruz Would Be 'Disaster' In General Election
Posted on 08/17/2013 8:59:51 AM PDT by Qbert
Republican establishment strategist Mike Murphy, who is close to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Mitt Romney and favors candidates like them, slammed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), saying he would be a disaster in a general election like George McGovern was for Democrats in 1972.
Murphy told National Review that though Cruz may win the nomination if he chooses to run because he appeals so strongly to conservatives, but he would not win a general election. In Murphy's eyes, conservatives that support Cruz are not "regular Republicans" like McCain and Romney, both of whom lost general elections.
During the 2012 election cycle, Murphy went out of his way to label conservative candidates who threatened Romney as the Republican versions of McGovern, doing so on programs like NBC's Meet The Press.

Love that track record, Murphy. Are you a RAT plant?
And a procession of ‘conservatives will line up and vote for the RINO because he can WIN!!!
Like mcCain and Willard did!
McCain and his stupid clown posse are losers
Getting campaign advice from McCain/Romney strategist is like getting a navigation lesson from the Captain of the Titanic.
It is obvious that the enemy to freedom and liberty is more the GOP right now than the Democrats. The establishment GOP will need to be completely purged or made irrelevant before this nation can elect conservatives. We may still be several election cycles away from being able to take this nation back.
Bull sh...er...bull Obamastuff.
Cruz - good.
McQueeg - RINO slime.
when RINOS start stampeding and getting their panties in a twist, it means a very good thing that a true conservative has finally rattled their cage..
The establishment fears Cruz.
I’m willing to risk it murphy - are you? Or do you LIKE losing?!
That means Sen. Cruz is, and will be, supported by
Americans FIRST, unlike the RINOs that brought
America open borders and ObamaCARE/RomneyCARE.
(It’s supposed to be a large L)
A thankfully growing number are. Now if we can get FR’ GOP sycophants to shut up.....
An expert who lost 2 elections he should have won has spoken!
Yeah, sure. If it hadn’t been for McCain and Romney, the Republicans probably would have lost two elections.
I was just thinking the same thing.
Ted Cruz would be a disaster in a general election
Not a resounding republican success story, like McCain?
The two easiest jobs in DC.
A lobbyist with a pocket full of money.
A political consultant.
I distinctly remember hearing the Republican establishment say the exact same thing about Ronald Reagan.
the rinoes will help the rats get rid of cruz for being ineligible
When it comes to disasters, this guy is an expert at not seeing them. With his track record, we should consider the exact opposite.
Actually, if there was not Team Romney and the Romney
hate of conservative women, McCain might have be
POTUS. But the malicious Romney (just like now)
will not allow any conservative to survive and threaten
his partner, Soros. That is why he have up
to Obama. Because it did not matter in the least.
From the lips of those who know how to lose....
Taking advice from this guy is akin to seeking advice on what color to paint your home from a blind man.
Good luck with the plan GOPe.
Cruz is ineligible for president.
Every (and I do mean EVERY) “Republican” in Congress today that is not backed by the Tea Party AND following the Tea Party principles (unlike Rubio, Ayotte, etc.) needs to have strong CONSERVATIVE, Tea Party supported challenger to primary them out of the office.
THIS is the only way the RINO’s can be purged from Congress, and that conservatism can restore our Republic.
Not forming a third party that would only stand to bicker with the GOPe and further weaken the party.
Because this guy knows all about winning General Elections. /s
Thanks Murph. That is good news.
If these guys say that guy is a disaster, then I want that guy!
Yeh like McStain and Willard did so well for us. The GOP elite is already freaking out at the thought that the Tea Party is going to take over.
IMO Chris Matthews (whom I loathe) is correct in his analysis that the GOP is going to take a hard right turn in 2016 and nominate Rand Paul for President (or Cruz). Sounds good to me.
Hope so. We have to stop the bleeding. Or to use the modern buzzword of the libs, stop encouraging the bullies ;)
My money would be on Cruz. He’s not intimidated by the media or the liberal/progressives that control them.
Well, McCain and Romney were solid conservatives who both beat hard-left presidential candidates, so their advisers must know what they’re talking about.
And if we DON’T get a true conservative, we are screwed!
Oh wait. We are ALREADY screwed with debt and entitlements run up by government.
It’s quite obvious by now that the “Republican strategist establishment” has been totally compromised by progressive infiltration.
"Im willing to risk it murphy - are you? Or do you LIKE losing?!"
GOP-e consultants got guaranteed payments of millions of dollars in the last election- win or lose, it really didn't matter. That's all they care about- padding their own pockets. They're doing the came thing now, selling the country's future by supporting amnesty in order to get easy money from the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, etc.
Sorry but you are full of it. They were SEVERE conservatives...or at least Romney was ;)
LOL. And in other news:
Captain of the Titanic Writes Manual for Avoiding Icebergs.
And based on your track record Mike you should know a disaster when you see one. Just WHO TOLD THIS GUY HE’S AN EXPERT?
of course he thinks this.
Don Henley - In the garden of Allah
“Today I made an appearance downtown
I am an expert witness, because I say I am
And I said, ‘Gentleman....and I use that word loosely....
I will testify for you
I’m a gun for hire, I’m a saint, I’m a liar
Because there are no facts, there is no truth
Just a data to be manipulated
I can get any result you like
What’s it worth to ya?
Because there is no wrong, there is no right
And I sleep very well at night
No shame, no solution
No remorse, no retribution
Just people selling T-shirts
Just opportunity to participate in the pathetic little circus
And winning, winning, winning’”
That is the best endorsement that Cruz could get. The GOPe said the same thing about Reagan.
Two time loser gives advice for third race.
Feck this people. I’m so sick of the RNC and her minions - ENOUGH already!
From the man who brought us President McCain and President Romney, huh?
McInsane did so well. /drippy-drippy-sarcasm
Then I say Ted Cruz for prez!
Yes, let’s dump Cruz.
Ford, Bush I, McCain and Romney were so much better.
