Obama to Propose College Ratings System on Bus Tour

By Colleen McCain Nelson

President Barack Obama on Thursday will announce proposals aimed at combating rising college costs by creating a new ratings system and eventually tying federal student aid to institutions’ performance.

The president will call for rating colleges before the 2015 school year on measures such as affordability and outcomes, including graduation and transfer rates.

Once that system is in place, Mr. Obama will ask Congress to allocate financial aid based on those ratings by 2018. Students at top-performing colleges could receive larger federal grants and more affordable student loans. The plan is expected to spur pushback from some colleges.

Mr. Obama also will urge innovation in higher education, encouraging colleges to pursue ideas including three-year accelerated degrees and massive open online courses. The president will return to some familiar ideas as well, calling for an expansion of his pay-as-you-earn program that caps student loan payments at 10% of monthly income and re-upping his funding requests for the Race to the Top program, which is focused on state higher education reforms.

The president will lay out his plan on a two-day bus tour that will wind through New York and into Pennsylvania. His first stop Thursday will take him to the University at Buffalo, with a speech planned later in the day in Syracuse.

The president’s college affordability plan is the latest in a wide-ranging series of proposals that the administration has dubbed “a better bargain for the middle class.”

Mr. Obama has said that making college affordable is a “personal mission,” as he’s pledged to shake up the current system. Tuition increases have far outpaced inflation in recent years.

Better you should have a CDL and be on Federal payroll and earning money , than going into debt.
The reason why colleges are so expensive is due to government subsidies and loans
College expense have far outstripped inflation rates significantly .
Better to be working, than going into $30,000 - $270,000 college debt encouraged and subsidized by government (!)
and then not even have a job !!

“...and eventually tying federal student aid to institutions’ performance...”

“Performance”, in this case meaning blind, unthinking support for the radical Democrat agenda. Likely meaning a headcount of radical leftist professors and administrators to determine funding. As well as funneling (kickbacks) a large percentage of those federal funds to Democrat candidates; and sponsoring Democrat only absentee voting campaigns among students, in which they sign filled out absentee ballots if they want to pass classes.

And awarding degrees solely based on political association.

Schools must censor all other forms of political speech, and suspend or expel students that resist mandatory political indoctrination. Beyond that, student grades will be determined by race, religion, gender, sexuality, etc.

An LGBT Muslim, illegal alien, racial minority indeterminate gender, will automatically be given straight A’s, which can only be lowered if they cannot accurately parrot leftist dialectic.

Whereas white or Asian Christian male heterosexual students will automatically be given straight F’s, unless they can satisfactorily self-criticize, parrot leftist dialectic, and give large campaign donations to Democrats.

This is a classic, top-down, one-size-fits-all approach to a problem that government helped create (in this case by via selective subsidies and below-market-interest loans).

The purpose of a governmental plan such as this is not to promote quality but instead, to exercise control.

Countless natural variations occur in populations, and these are reflected in college admissions in such areas as access, affordability, and educational outcomes.

To selectively punish or reward schools by means of arbitrary Federal Standards is a mirror of the government's approach to industry on the whole, the results of which may be found in the present conditions of high unemployment, low competitiveness, and regulatory paralysis.

But none of that matters to a great number of Americans who, having been uniformly trained by our government-run education mills to ignore logic, reason, and history, now expect every problem to be solved by the beneficent powers in Washington.

By the way: does Barack Obama even remember what the inside of the White House looks like? When was he last there? January?

I don’t think any coach chassis are US made anymore.

I’ve driven:
MCI-9
MCI-10
Blue Bird School buses (one with an 8 speed)
GMC 4106
Old Carpenter
Thomas Cab over

Blue Bird... taken over by an investment takeover firm called...kid you not.. Cerebus. The name for the two headed dog guarding the gates of hell in greek mythology.

When family owned— great company. Had a Bluebird bus conversion RV... tough as nails.

This guy does not work like that.

The *sole* rating criteria will be the level of liberalism.

Teaching simple left-liberalism will get you a D.
Teaching MSNBC barking-moonbat-liberalism will get you a C.
Teaching Marxism and Fascism will get you a B.
Teaching pedophelia, Anarchism, and Satanism (or Wahabbism) will get you an A.

A better bargain for the unemployed middle class who cannot buy a home, much less pay for college subsidized by the feds who stole the money from them in the first place.

Liar. How about release YOUR grades from college, genius boy. Then we could apply your rating system to your colleges.
octomoron crack daddy.

Getting lefty/hippie college professors and administrators to take a pay cut back to the levels that the private sector’s are paying is the trick, and obarky ain’t going to seriously try to do that.

Obvious plan to take over universities and colleges. If you support and teach Obamunism, homosexuality and abortion, your students get financial aid. If you don’t, you don’t.

He wants to rate schools based on graduation rates? The schools with higher standards are likely to have lower graduation rates than the schools which are “degree mills” and allow their students to get A’s if they show up.
And I am guessing he will include racial diversity in rating those schools - so Asians will have a harder time getting in to college because statistically they are “over represented” in the best schools...the schools must decrease the number of Asian students and whites in order to make way for minorities deemed “underrepresented” at the best schools.

I’d wager that the lowest rated will be the hated “for profit schools.” I bet the actual plan is to use the power of the federal government to put them out of business.

Why not rate the students too? The people who administer the ACT released a report the other day that indicates 75% of people who take that test are unprepared in at least one of the five areas tested to do college level work!

That report also noted a great disparity between planned student majors and job opportunities. The grants and loans are no measured against this simple test: Does America really need another (fill in the blank with an occupation)? If the answer is, “No” or “Not really” why should taxpayers subsidize (and likely get stuck with the full bill whent he student defaults on the loan) a person who wants to enter that occupation?

Also targeting grants and loans will prevent people like Liz War Hen, currently the senior senator from Massholia from making $500,000.00 for teaching one law school course a semester!
