“Regulating” marijuana?

Not a chance. All bets are off.

Why not make it 40% and spend that money hiring mo gov’t drones to staff marijuana treatment programs?

It’s always about the money. Pot isn’t even very habit forming, but the govt. will soon be hopelessly addicted...

There is also talk about making dispensaries pay into a fund to subsidize it for the poor.

It appears that I was correct about thinking decriminalization was wiser than legalization. Better to pay a small fine when you get caught than pay every time you buy.

Anybody paying any of those taxes is just handing a signed confession to a Federal prosecutor. One day, when the time is right, that confession will get used.

IIRC, the marijuana law was statewide referendum so the city is unlikely to profit unless they get the whole state to join in on the tax scheme.

Personally, I wouldn't care if they taxed pot like it was gasoline but the real question is to what lengths the users would go to avoid paying the tax? You have to remember most pot smokers a) have already shown a blatant disregard for the law all these years by purchasing/growing an illegal drug and b) are pretty darned savvy already about getting around the law to feed their habit.

Ultimately, I think it will fail unless they can get the entire state to join on the tax.

yes, the libertarians have been saying for years that all we need to do is make all their junk legal....

oh some will buy it legally....many more will grow their own, steal from somebody, and break into weed shops....

Oh, the State wants to throw their taxes on top of this. Now that we are being governed by Dems, they never miss an opportunity to tax anything.

Money is to government as heroin and cocaine to drug addicts.

It's a sales tax. Those that grow their own wouldn't be impacted by a sales tax.

I grow my own tobacco, and I don't pay any sales tax on what I grow.

If its legal to grow, why feed the government by giving them taxes?

If I go buy a beer and pay cash, I've paid the tax for the beer, but there isn't any link to make a signed confession out of it...

How do you think sales taxes work?
