Obama’s new executive order will kill the 110-year-old Civilian Marksmanship Program

The White House announced on Thursday that it intends to “ban almost all re-imports of military surplus firearms to private entities” through executive order, which would effectively shut down the 110-year-old Civilian Marksmanship Program.

In a Fact Sheet published on Whitehouse.gov today referencing the upcoming executive order the ban on importing military weapons is designed to “keep military-grade firearms off our streets.” Exceptions for import may be allowed for museums.

The CMP tightly controls the importation of obsolete military weapons. The program was created by the U.S. Congress as part of the 1903 War Department Appropriations Act with the purpose of allowing civilians to hone their marksmanship skills, should they later be called into military service.

My military 30-06 Springfield rifle converted into a hunting weapon is problematic to these people? To a deer or moose, maybe.

Well, except for Federal, state & local law enforcement Brute Squads. They NEED military-grade firearms on our streets.

I'm not sure why - they must be at war with someone...

Well, that's what Obama's is good at.
Finding programs that work - and kill them.

All the while finding programs that fail, and throw more of our money at them.

Didn’t Clinton try the same thing with questionable results?
That is as much of a clown action as I’ve seen. When was the last time you saw anyone use an M1 Garand in a holdup?
Obama should be wearing big shoes and a red round nose. What a piece of dog waste. The part about street thugs regestering guns under a corporate name is something they will have to explain to me. There are checks within the Bureau of Tobacco and Firearms against this kind of thing. A man walks into a gun store and tries to register a gun under a corporate name. What happens? The guy asks for proof. Where does the guy get any proof of association with the corporation? This is just political bull!

Kicking myself in the arse for never getting that Garand.

Me too, or I'd even settle for the M1 Carbine. Heck, I wished I bought a Nagant rifle or Lee-Enfield when I had a chance.

Nagants are still plentiful, and while not GI issue, Auto Ordinance is still producing the M1 carbine.

Is ole Joe a little clueless here? How many crimes have been committed using a 1917 Enfleld? How often? Once a week? Once a month? Once a year? Once a decade? Once Ever? How many street thugs are drooling for a bolt action rifle that hold FIVE ROUNDS .... oooh and get to fumble with a CLIP to cram the cartridges in ... uh, how many??

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that an old rifle that’s dang near FIVE FEET long is SO much the hidden armament ..

Yeah boy, that’s really going to drop the crime rate in the cities!

As far as I know, this was the only federal program that wasn’t at best indifferent to the original intent of the Second Amendment. Most of them are outright hostile about it.

The CMP gets its rifles from the military, not from foreign imports. The last batches came from Greece, Italy, Denmark and a few from Germany and were loaned to those countries after WWII under the Military Assistance Program. When they are through with them, they will return them. There are other European countries with rifles that were loaned to them under the MAP and depending on the country, they may or may not be coming back to the US.

Haven't read the executive order, but the CMP does not import. It gets its rifles from the Army which gets them as returns from foreign Governments that borrowed the rifles in decades past. Accordingly if the ban is on importation by commercial organizations there should not been an issue.

OTOH the current batch of Garands and M-1 Carbines awaiting importation from Korea would be held up. As Korea is looking to sell the rifles to importers rather than return rifles to the US Army. One of the controversies is whether the Korean rifles are loaners or whether the Koreans bought them from Uncle Sam ... they did some of both apparently.

I am still seething about the destruction of all the Garands and Carbines that were to be returned from South Korea. What a waste.
