Fast-food workers in more than 50 cities Thursday are striking for fair pay and the right to form a union the biggest walkout to hit the industry.
What can we do to address this low-wage jobs crisis? Exerting pressure on the fast-food and retail giants that rake in billions in profits is a good starting point. These companies can afford to share more of their wealth with their frontline workers and should be doing so.
Boosting wages for Americas lowest-paid workers is a crucial step toward reducing economic inequality and rebuilding a strong economy. Perhaps 50 years from now, well look back on the fast-food workers fight as the catalyst we so desperately needed.

These are jobs for High School kids to break into the job field and gain some experience and people skills and then move on.

Raise a family on a fast food wage? Probably can’t be done, or not done well. Minimum wage entry level positions are just that, a stepping stone to something better - not a career choice. Yeah, that means you may have to wait, put off your family plans until you move on to something better.

If you started a family without having gotten married and having a steady job, then what the heck were you thinking?

Union goons like SEIU are the only people that really benefit from this stuff.
They have contracts that tie their wage to the minimum wage.
Minimum wage goes up and your $35 an hour union wage goes up.
Everybody else gets screwed.
Especially people on fixed incomes.
It is a measure of how bad the economy is when people are trying to raise a family in such a professional position, but it may be equally a measure of the ability of large numbers of current High School (or equivalent--or not) graduates.
If burger flipping is as ambitious as today's workforce gets, we're doomed.
These idiots do realize that raising the minimum wage will have an across the board cost effect and their new higher wage will likely have the same, or slightly less buying power right?
Oh wait, they are working a minimum wage job because they are not smart enough to advance up the ladder.
The unions are pushing increasing the minimum wage, because many union contracts are pegged to it.
Exactly. Washington State tied it’s minimum wage to inflation after unions pushed through a ballot initiative. Now the unions get a COL raise each year without having to negotiate for it. Minimum wage is now $ 9.15.
When I was a kid I baby sat, worked in a department store for holidays and then part time while in college, the post office during Christmas, my cousins picked berries n the summer. Never did we think these would be our ultimate job. We had better plans that fortunately worked out.

I think we should pass a special law that requires any business with a drive through window to pay their employees $50 per hour and contribute 25% to their 401k and provide them with no deductible heath insurance and 6 weeks paid vacation per year and overtime over 29 hours per week.
Additionally the employer must contribute $1500 per year for each employee’s child under the age of 26 for a scholarship fund.
I know I would lose weight under this plan.

If these people want to know why fast food wages havent gone up they can blame Obama. It is Obama that has swelled the unemployment rolls and refused to deport low skill illegal immigrants. The reason low skilled jobs pay so little is because there is a huge surplus of low skilled workers.
Obamas policies have put so many people on the streets looking for work that the fast food industry does not have to compete for workers. The law of supply and demand applies to labor as well as goods.
You may remember back in GW Bush's first term that fast food restaurants in many areas had to pay above minimum wage to get enough workers. Well welcome to the age of Obama when if there were not minimum wage laws fast food workers would be paid less than they are because there is a glut of low skilled labor thanks to Obamas policies.
That is why it benefits them to be community agitators.
As I remember it fast food jobs are historically entry level jobs. Thats why so many high school and college kids work at Mickey Dee’s etc. Then the theory is that after a time you work your way up the ladder or train for a better job somewhere else. Its not supposed to be a career.
I think if a guy grew up in the 1970s and 1980s...they knew that the burger flipper job was just a temp phase, and no one ever stayed more than three years. Typically, if you were still around in the fourth year...you were now the shift supervisor, and by the tenth year...you might be leaning toward assistant manager of the operation. That was the only permanent phase a person could dream on.
I think over the past twenty years...people have dumbed themselves down several notches. I can’t say anyone...even those who have degrees....are all that bright. Most appear to be fairly naive, and lacking in common sense. Maybe it was TV....booze....drugs....or just plain laziness...but this isn’t the same society that existed in the 1980s.

For the unions, it’s not about getting them any kind of raise. It’s the union dues. For example, with 1.4 million Walmart workers, assuming they were all fulltime and paying just a nickel an hour, the union representing them would earn about $140 million dollars per year. If the union were to represent all service workers across the country, we would be talking about billions in union dues.
Of course, we know the service workers being represented would be paying more than a nickel per hour.

This is what happens when we dumb down our society. it used to be for kids in high school and even some people that were going through hard times, now it is a way of life.

More and more, that is the case.
The long term effects of that and other policies will come home to roost.
When we were kids, we were driving tractors pulling loads of hay down the State Roads (pavement) at 12. We were cutting, raking, and baling hay (not just loading the cart and stacking it in the barn) by 14, and many of us held a commercial fisheries license by 14, too. I'd harvested my first whitetail deer at 11.
We were encouraged to be responsible, and with that demonstrated responsibility came opportunities and trust to do bigger, better things.
Nowadays, there are laws against kids who are the same age we were then doing the things we did. With nothing left to do but bum around, it is no wonder these kids get into all sorts of trouble.
No, no hyperbole here. What imbeciles. I hope these low wage, low information types follow through and screw themselves out of the jobs they currently hold.
Fast food work was never intended asd a career choice, it was always an entry level job to teach youngsters about work ethics and having a job so that they could move on to something better. Apparently, they don't aspire to anything better and think that the fast food industry should cater to their idiotic demands. It has never crossed their miniscule minds that every fast food manager/owner has about 100 applications on file for every one of their jobs and they can be replaced in a heartbeat.
However, if we assume worst case, the price of fast food will skyrocket, placing it out of reach of about half the country (or better) which means that half or more of these overpaid imbeciles will be back on the unemployment line, hopefully having learned a fundemanetal lesson in the supply and demand side of economics. The rest of us will likely refuse to pay the necessary outrageous prices for fast food, leading to the demise of the industry even quicker.

Raise a family?
Those people are not even paid enough for basic things like gas, utilities and rent. Forget food, insurance, health care, clothing...Those big luxuries.
Of course, nowadays, the basic things in the U.S., like paying rent, are now considered luxuries.
Granny maintained that such jobs were ‘Loser Filters’ after they served the purpose of charity.
When my daughter was 12 she wanted a Gucci belt. Told her she could have one but she had to earn the money to pay for it. Shortly after that she started getting up at 4 a.m. three days a week and worked until 6:30 a.m., at a little shop down the street and stuff small plastic bags with ads that the shop owner would later hang on door knobs. When she finished would come home, have breakfast and go off to school. Saved every penny and in about a month she had enough to buy that belt which she kept for about 20 years.
Great experience for her.
Jumbo jacks were a buck ten years ago under Bush. Prices on fast food have already tripled under this administration, while the press hyenas insist with a straight face that there is no inflation.
Can you imagine what a Big Mac would cost if these people get their way? The jobs would have to be guaranteed by the government dole in some manner of fashion.
