Some 50,000 people have descended upon the city of Dallas. They journeyed from many corners of the world to be a part of a massive, three-day Christian conference sponsored by megachurch pastor, Bishop T.D. Jakes...

I don’t know much about TD Jakes, he seems to be a true minister of God....

50,000 people - quite a crowd, but probably of no interest to the media except as an opportunity for snark. I should add that I’m not much of a fan of most televangelists, either. I could probably count the ones I sort-of trust on one hand - Charles Stanley and . . . well, it’s easier to name the dubious ones - Benny Hinn, Mike Murdock, Steve Munsey, Creflo Dollar, Jack van Impe, Paul Crouch, etc. I put T.D. Jakes somewhere in the middle.

re: I don’t know much about TD Jakes, he seems to be a true minister of God....

Correct me if I am wrong, but I get the impression he is die-hard Obama supporter. A true minister of God stands up to evil. A true minister of God acts as the prophets did in speaking the truth. I wish I could say TD Jakes was such a man of God. But I think he is pretty wishy washy. I read that Jakes attacked Franklin Graham for questioning Obama’s Christianity. If there is nothing about Obama that would cause a true man of God to question Obama’s beliefs, then we are living in an alternate universe.

I think, in the final analysis, TD Jakes’ color is more important to him than his faith.

I’m not much of a fan of “factory churches” either. I would find it difficult to get a personal relationship with God when I’m sitting in the bleachers with a crowd. But that’s just me. I suspect many of those churches become beholden to their size; worried about losing customers by preaching the Gospel, especially to those who aren’t comfortable hearing it. Too many people want to worship a God they can use, rather than submit to God who wishes to use them.

But these are just my opinions. If it works to bring people to God, then fine. I’ll be the first to admit that being in a smaller congregation does not guarantee “spiritual purity.” The Lord knows full well what a sinner I am.

You put Charles Stanley up as a good example?

He belongs in the other camp.

Oprah is very religious and uses a lot of “god” talk, but the truth is, she is not a Christian. What she believes is essentially New Age. She believes that there are many paths to God. Jesus is not the “way, the truth, and the life” but a good man. Sin is not sin. God approves just about everything you do. Being true to yourself, whatever that means, is more important than holiness.

Why in the world would a minister of the gospel invite a nonbeliever to headline at a Christian conference?

T.D. Jakes is a HERETIC! He does not believe in the doctrine of the Godhead, commonly referenced as the Trinity. He is NOT a man of God. He appeals to emotionalism, panders to the poor while living an extravagant lifestyle. He promotes a vain philosophy that is a mile-wide to draw adherents but an inch-deep in terms of the doctrinal teachings of Jesus Christ. BEWARE!!!

"He belongs in the other camp."

I don't know what you mean by "the other camp." If you are saying he's a liberal, I disagree. I've listened to him 15 or 20 times, and he never struck me as a liberal. All I meant was that he seems sincere - he's not constantly talking about money, he's not proclaiming spurious healing powers, he's not spouting dubious "prophecy," he's not preaching the "prosperity Gospel," and his message seems very much within the bounds of traditional Protestant orthodoxy. (I am not a Protestant, so mine is an outsider's perspective.)

He doesn’t preach prosperity, as you said, but he is quite wealthy just as all the others are.

Plus he said he would step down from the pulpit if he ever got divorced (he has always refused to marry divorced people and said divorced people should not preach) but he didn’t step down after he got divorced.

Just another preacher with a huge following. The rules seem to be different for them.

Charles Stanley is not a phoney. He is one of the few televangelists that I trust.

Yes, well, that is why I subtitled it “Oprah Worship?” :)

The Oprah has very little respect in my book...I do believe she worked hard to get where she is, and now as one of the .01%, she seems to have truly forgotten her position is one she is in only because God allowed her to get there...

I remember hearing recently that when she was a young woman, she was well-versed in Scripture and the Bible...but now it appears as though show biz has taken her heart away...

I do know for a while she was a member of Jeremiah Wright’s church, or at least attended, but even he was too whacko for her....

I’ve been watching Charles Stanley for years and love him but his son on the other hand, I don’t care for his sermons at all.
