The Beethoven arrangements of English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh folk songs have a fascinating provenance.

Like most composers, Beethoven needed a ready source of cash. He struck a deal with the London publishing firm of Boozey & Hawkes to write arrangements of these folk tunes anonymously. The deal was that B&H would send Beethoven the sheet music and the gold advance, and Beethoven would return the finished arrangement. His name was not to be associated with the project.

The first volume was pure hack work. But somewhere in the course of writing the second volume, Beethoven really got into these arrangements. You can see the change in his writing. He began to take great care of how the words were set.

The upshot was that Beethoven learned English, although it was a very quaint Elizabethan English, full of “thee”, thou”, prithee”, and “Marry, sir!”

When the English mulatto violinist George Bridgetower came to Vienna to work on rehearsals for the premiere of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, Beethoven tried out his English on George. He was easily understood, but George had a difficult time not laughing whenever Beethoven spoke his quaint English.
