Mississippi Town Objects to Church’s Giant Cross
Fox News ^ | 09\04\13 | Todd Starnes

It’s a battle of Christians versus Christians in Brandon, Miss. where city officials oppose efforts by a prominent church to erect a giant cross because it violates a zoning ordinance. But the pastor of the church said elected officials are also afraid the cross might offend Muslims. FOLLOW TODD ON FACEBOOK FOR CONSERVATIVE NEWS. CLICK HERE TO JOIN! The First Baptist Church of Brandon petitioned the city to install a 110-foot tall cross on its property alongside Interstate 20. The project is sponsored by “Crosses Across America,” a non-profit group that builds giant crosses along the nation’s highways.

that’s a pretty apt comparison, the purpose is the same.

I know that Jesus commanded his followers to preach the gospel as evidenced by Matthew 24:14. I don’t recall where Jesus commanded his followers to erect crosses, although doing so arguably supports the gospel message. Corrections welcome.

All they have to do is slightly redesign it so that the arms rotate..then call it a wind turbine..nobody objects to clean energy.heck..we could probably get a government subsidy to build crosses...er, wind turbines..all across America..

Not particularly related, but Brandon MS is the only town I’ve had a anti-Jewish event occur in a small town. (Big cities always have weirdos.)

I was training US pilots in Columbus, MS and decided to tour MS (in particular, I hiked the Natchez Trace and saw the battlefields at Vicksburg.)

Long story short, this lady (a Mrs. Jones who turned out to be a 4th grade schoolteacher) started screaming at me in the supermarket at the top of her lungs saying I was resposible for killing Jesus and doomed to Hell.

Came out of the blue at me.

I was like, “I just want to buy some tuna fish and bread, leave me alone.”

Anyway, she kept screaming at me, saying all sorts of horrid things, to the point the police came because she knocked over my shopping cart.

Apparently, she had some sort of dementia (she was older) and had an event.

They took her away, still screaming.

I can’t recall anywhere in the Bible that he commanded them to build churches either.

Or schools.

Or hospitals either, come to think of it.

But I think that its more likely that the gospel is going to be preached in churches, schools and hospitals than under a big cross.

Yes, that Groom, Texas cross is really spectacular. We stopped there once to make the Stations of the Cross.

I went South of Brandon in rural Rankin county a few years ago to look at pickup. The deeper in the woods I went the more Mobile Homes, Rebel flags and pit bulls I saw. I asked the guy if there were many blacks around there. He spit his wad of Red Man out and said “Naw too many” Probably goes the same for Jews.

The picture is not the actual picture of the town or the cross that hasn’t been built yet.

Are there no widows and orphans needing care in Brandon, Pearl, Jackson, Flowood, etc.????

So, you think it's an either/or thing? If this group erects a giant cross, then that must mean a widow or orphan goes without? That's not proper logic. This is not a "zero sum game."

There may be some widows and orphans, and I’m sure you have donated as much as possible.

Build it tomorrow! Memphis also has a great witness...the 3 crosses, while travelling on East I-40. Can’t be missed. Let the gospel be proclaimed...whether through God’s people or through huge crosses on display, for all to see.

Let the world be reminded of the sacrifice Jesus made for them.

I’ve seen two, one in Indiana and one in Illinois.

The cross in Indiana (I-70)is far off on a hill and beautiful. Illinois cross is right next to the freeway and it’s both kind of creepy and awesome. You come around a corner and it JUMPS out. Can’t decide if I like it or not. Almost too imposing and looks cold and hard. IMO

I’m surprised any community in Mississippi would have reservations about the display of a giant Cross. I would have no problem at all, would like to have one here in Olive Branch off 78 ( future I 22 Memphis to Birmingham ).

I had a great time in MS.

The event with Mrs. Jones just stood out such that it’s what I think of when I hear “Brandon, MS.”

That, and being hearded into a very wet basement during a tornado.

“elected officials are also afraid the cross might offend Muslims. “

It sounds like Muslims have not complained. I suspect the politicians are the ones offended.
