Marines delay Osprey deployment

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa – The Marine Corps said it will delay the deployment of an Osprey aircraft squadron to Okinawa following (yet another) Air Force "helicopter" crash in a military training area Monday.

The fiery crash of an HH-60 Pave Hawk sent plumes of smoke into the air near Camp Hansen in central Okinawa and left one crew member still missing early Tuesday.

Post #9 doesn’t have one of those tubes/pipes, like the two in Post #10.

The problems are three fold; higher maintenance on the rotating equipment, problematic maintenance (A cherry picker type vehicle is required to get to the top rotor.), overall height (They will not fit on any ship we have - too tall.).

Those are just the main issues. But some new stiff rotor designs are coming along that may make a lot of these issues go away.

Time will tell.

Well, it was safe enough to carry the president’s pet dog to join the rest on vacation. The dog has its own private transportation - complete with Marine crew.

Twenty years old , millions per issue and still unsafe at any speed.

Actually Sikorsky's Crashhawk has been in service for over 34 years.

Do you engage in the same emoting when a H-60 or H-47 crashes?

It was rather convenient that you omitted the date of this article. That's a common tactic of the disingenuous cabal here at FR; attempting to make old news appear current.

By the way, the second squadron of Ospreys completed its relocation to Futenma from Iwakuni during the second week of August and the Japanese government is now considering purchasing their own fleet of V-22s.

I’m no expert, but these are common on many aircraft.

I believe they are a form of radar probe, which work better when moved as far away from the mass of the plane as possible.

Ergo, these pointy , long tubes.

Replace those giant turboprops with ducted fan technology, and all those problems you mentioned are solved. PLUS, the aircraft gains in much quicker maneuverability.

They are are the refueling probes. It was so obvious I outguessed myself.

Coaxial rotors overcome the problem of retreating blade stall and make a tail rotor unnecessary. Ducted fans have their own limitations and problems.

Like you said, I’m no expert.

Doesn't every type of propulsion, for automobiles and aircraft, have it's own limitations and problems ?
