MOSCOW — A Russian warship carrying "special cargo" will be dispatched toward Syria, a navy source said on Friday, as the Kremlin beefs up its presence in the region ahead of possible US strikes against the Damascus regime.

The large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov will on Friday leave the Ukrainian port city of Sevastopol for the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, from where it will head to Syria's coast, the Interfax news agency quoted a source from the Saint Petersburg-based central naval command as saying.

"The ship will make call in Novorossiisk, where it will take on board special cargo and set off for the designated area of its combat duty in the eastern Mediterranean," the source said.

The source did not specify the nature of the cargo.

Obama’s not afraid. He’s a former community advisor you know? with multiple tours in some of the blackest neighborhoods in Chicago. And he did personally rip Osama Bin Laden’s head off and spit down his neck. Syria will be a walk in the park for him. even with Russian antiship/aircraft weapons deployed.

Russian warships cross Bosphorus, en route to Syria
AFP ^ | September 5, 2013

Three Russian warships crossed Turkey’s Bosphorus Strait Thursday en route to the eastern Mediterranean, near the Syrian coast, amid concern in the region over potential US-led strikes in response to the Damascus regime’s alleged use of chemical weapons.

The SSV-201 intelligence ship Priazovye, accompanied by the two landing ships Minsk and Novocherkassk passed through the Bosphorus known as the Istanbul strait that separates Asia from Europe, an AFP photographer reported.

Can they shoot down cruise missiles, or just planes?

Mainly for long range acquisition and tracking of airplanes, under some circumstances probably stealth too.

CMs would be low altitude and wouldn’t pop up on the radar until in horizon range which is <10 miles... so probably not an S-300 would get one. But there are others like an SRAD SA-15 that might.

The point of the S-300 is that with two, three maybe 4 systems, they could blanket the parts of Syria we’d likely attack (each covering a 300 km circle). It is a plane killer and a very good one. We would not get through unscathed.

Thanks; that’s kinda what I was thinking might be happening. This isn’t going to go or end well, in any scenario contemplated by 0muslim&Co. I pray for our Military that we don’t have to waste any more lives in that stinking ME hellhole.

Obama has played this just right.

Now it will look to the world like Russia moved in and we blinked.

That Obama, he certainly is a crafty son of a bitch.

If there’s a way to diminish U. S. prestige, Bath-house Barry will find it.

Yeah...it was a software upgrade to a generation old radar.

It is not a very capable radar, IMO. Because of the type phase shifters they use, it is not capable of using the same settings on transmit and receive, thus no Pulse-Doppler capability...a big drawback.

Putin: Syria chemical attack is ‘rebels’ provocation in hope of intervention’

Published time: September 06, 2013 13:29

(snip)

Russia “will help Syria” in the event of a military strike, Putin stressed as he responded to a reporter’s question at the summit.

“Will we help Syria? We will. And we are already helping, we send arms, we cooperate in the economics sphere, we hope to expand our cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, which includes sending humanitarian aid to support those people – the civilians – who have found themselves in a very dire situation in this country,” Putin said.
