Sen. Ted Cruz: ‘We Need A Hundred More Like Jesse Helms’ In Senate

Senator Ted Cruz spoke at an event for the Heritage Foundation on Wednesday, and amidst what was a strong foreign policy speech, Cruz got a little personal and talked about the late Republican Senator Jesse Helms, the first politician Cruz ever gave money to. Cruz touted all the “crazy things” Helms said, not as a negative, but as a positive, declaring that the Senate could use “a hundred more like Jesse Helms in the U.S. Senate.”

Cruz recalled how he sent ten dollars to Helms when he was a kid, joking that he “may have been Jesse Helms’ single largest donor as a percentage of annual income.” He said he did it because of how much people were attacking Helms, and brought up an anecdote about how the famous actor John Wayne donated to Helms’ campaign, and Helms called him back to thank him.

“Apparently Wayne said, ‘Oh yeah, you’re that guy saying all those crazy things. We need 100 more like you.’ The willingness to say all those crazy things is a rare, rare characteristic, and you know what? It’s every bit as true now as it was then. We need a hundred more like Jesse Helms in the U.S. Senate.”

Helms was an incredibly controversial political figure in his time, considered by many to be an unapologetic racist.

"If we must have an enemy at the head of Government, let it be one whom we can oppose, and for whom we are not responsible, who will not involve our party in the disgrace of his foolish and bad measures." - Alexander Hamilton

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldn’t make any sense at all." -- President Ronald Reagan

"It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." - Samuel Adams

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

What is lacking in today’s body politic is a philosophy that can be advanced BECAUSE of the veiled threats of doom by the opposition.

Without that “Damn the torpeodes! Full speed ahead!” philosophy, the meekest member of the opposition can turn us into sniveling, sobbing, cowards such as Boehner and McConnell.

For example, the manipulating, fear-mongering, threat of doom and gloom promoted by the supporters of Government harm to our Republic that a certain Republican action would “shutdown the Government” SHOULD be a clarion call for Republicans to shut down the Government to right the wrong that the Government is currently doing.

To not shut down the Government is to support continuation of the wrong that the Government is currently doing.

Whatever wrong is being protected by the supporters of Governmental wrong, SHOULD BE our signal that we should focus on undoing what they are trying to protect.

What is required to right the wrong is known to all Warriors: THE COURAGE OF ONE’S CONVICTIONS.

Instead, today in our sorry body politic, these are times of whimpering, timid, compromise-away-one’s-values in the false hope of achieving the equivalent of a 1960’s group hippie hug.

These are times when we wait silently for a larger than life, Warrior to swoop in on a white horse and make everything nicey-nice again.

These are times when the majority of people who vote choose politicians that promise pie-in-the-sky to them, and then these same politicians get put in charge of increasing the debt burden on our Grandchildren’s descendants.

Thus, we have a self-caused burden of a virtual cycle of debt to our descendants caused by promises that we choose to vote for.

These are the times when the obvious solution to these problems can be seen by “The Man in the Glass.”

BTW, read below the above quoted poem for suggestions to improve one’s response-ability.

The Man in the Glass

by Dale Wimbrow, (c) 1934
1895-1954

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the man staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and “chisel” a plum,
And think you’re a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear up to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may get what you want down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the guy in the glass.

Ted Cruz--"It’s every bit as true now as it was then. We need a hundred more like Jesse Helms in the U.S. Senate."

Mitt Romney--"I'm not a partisan politician. My hope is that, after this election, it will be the moderates of both parties who will control the Senate, not the Jesse Helmses."

The "racist" Jesse Helms once had James Meredith, the civil rights hero who integrated the University of Mississippi on his staff.

Cruz continues to prove himself to be the real deal.
I guarantee you that most GOP members of Congress would distance themselves from Helms — let alone single him out for praise.

I think Cruz is talking about Helms' long tenure on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Much of the conflict is how that committee is voting on Syria.

Back in May the 15 to 3 vote to arm the Syrian rebels, and then most recently the 10 to 8 vote to bomb Syria.

All the experience on the committee is gone. Helms, Biden, Lugar, Kerry, Dodd.

Now you have Corker in the GOP chair and he hasn't been the Senate/on the committee very long, and just months as minority chairman.

We have a very inexperienced Congress with the big turnover in 2006, 2008, 2010.

It is foolish to let Congress make this decision, because many/most of them don't know squat about foreign policy.

They may no longer be on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but Biden is VP and Kerry SOS. If this is what ‘experience’ gets us, I’ll pass.

Liberals and watered-down Republicans still can’t forgive Jesse Helms for opposing having Martin Luther King Day as a Federal Holiday, even though Helms and the late John East made a strong case on the Senate floor documenting King’s communist connections. I’m sure Cruz’s statement will shake things up.
