Shutdown puts WIC food program for vulnerable mothers at risk

Jason Sickles, Yahoo! 2 hours ago

DALLAS — In a shopping center parking lot 1,300 miles from Washington’s bureaucracy and bickering, teen mom Karina Luciano loaded a watermelon and baby formula into her car.

Luciano didn’t realize the federal assistance program that just purchased the food items for her children, Aimee, 2, and Jaiden, 11 months, is now in jeopardy because of the government shutdown.

“Oh my god, I think I’m going to cry,” Luciano said upon learning the news. “This is really bad.”

Nearly 9 million low-income mothers and children receive benefits under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Congress’ inability to pass a funding bill forced the USDA, which oversees the $7 billion program, to shutter support for WIC’s clinical services, food and administrative costs.

“Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available,” read a message on the WIC page of USDA.gov.

The defunding, which doesn't affect USDA programs for school lunches and food stamps, is already producing consequences across the country.

Late on Tuesday, WIC officials in Utah closed all offices and canceled appointments until the federal government resumes operations.

“Utah WIC checks for the month of October are still being accepted at WIC authorized grocery stores,” the Utah Department of Health wrote on its website.

This is terrible!

Does this mean they will have to stop falling on their back, legs in the air, every time a ghetto drug dealer walks past?

Seriously the Dems promised me that U.N.Planned Parenthood would help reduce the cost of WiC....

It’s not as if they don’t have a dozen other ways, taxpayer-funded, to feed their obese kids. NOBODY starves to death in America unless they want to, or the hospital forces them to.

Fruits and veggies are NOT what WIC folks are buying.

Yes it is. WIC is very restrictive on what you can buy. Whole grains. Fruits and vegetables. Juice. Formula. You cannot buy sugary cereals or junk food. EBT needs to be as restrictive as WIC.

And this teen mother with a 2 year old and 11 month old needs to close her legs. Accident once? Sure. Two? That's not an accident, it's a plan for more free stuff.

LOL

Shea, like they couldn’t stand to miss a meal or two...

I have never understood how so many poor people can be so fat.

If they are so poor and their resources so scarce I’d think they would be very carefool on even the necessities, such as food and make wiser choices as to what they put in their bodies.

Doesn’t make sense.

Go to the local food pantry, honey. I'm sure you know where it is.

Yeah, the only people that use WIC are the truly needy women, infants, and children...

This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco , TX

PUT ME IN CHARGE . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, or smoke, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22-inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

I love this one.

AND while you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes, that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

Those people that you see that are fat are in fact malnourished because they aren’t eating anything but carbs & fat & salt.

I was behind one of the WIC mothers at Kroger one Sunday afternoon. She had to have weighted three hundred pounds. She was so fat her stomach hung down below her shirt, half way to her knees. There was a baby, around a year old, and a young skinny guy who looked as though he was on drugs. These are the people we are paying to reproduce. Listening to her talk, you could tell she’d be a life long moocher. These are the people we have indebted ourselves to China to support. These are the people who vote themselves more from the pockets of we the taxpayer. These are the people our political leaders hold up above us. These are the people you don’t see on the news about the costs of government shut down.
