The state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday refused a directive from the National Park Service to close a host of popular state properties because of the federal government shutdown.
The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion's share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers.
State officials opted to keep public lands open as Gov. Scott Walker blamed both Republicans and Democrats for the partial government shutdown and said congressional leaders should run the nation more like Wisconsin. Democrats balked at those comments, saying the Republican governor has had a tumultuous tenure that has divided people.
Even though federal lands such as the Apostle Islands National Lakeshorehave been shuttered, the DNR issued a statement saying all state parks, trails and other recreational properties were open and not affected by the federal government's budget problems.
The agency also reopened a boat launch Wednesdayat Wyalusing State Park on the Mississippi River. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service closed the launch on Tuesday because it was on federal land.
But in a sign of defiance, the DNR removed the barricades at the landing, saying it had the legal authority to operate the launch under a 1961 agreement with the federal government.

I’m hopeful that somewhere in all of this that the feds will actually demonstrate what portion of federal law actually gives them the right to unilaterally order any shutdown of any national park without any actual reason other than budget issues.
Somehow, I doubt that they’ll actually quote or cite any law, as I am relatively sure that ‘because we say so’ wasn’t really written into the law.
Preferably by the County Sheriff.
Wisconsin.
Anyway, 1 800 - you know
Not sure why “Rick Scott Walker” lay blame at the feet of the Republicans.
As the original poster of this article, you are of course aware that it is about Wisconsin and not Florida and the Governor of Wisconsin is Scott Walker and not Florida Governor Rick Scott.
There’s not a quote.
I imagine the JS has a challenging relationship with the Governor.
Read the sentence, it’s weird.
H’s decided to keep open the parks because he blames republicans?
The whole article is about the parks’ being funded by state funds.
If the governor had said he blames republicans as well as democrats, leaving BO completely out of it, this journalist would have put a quote in there. It would be huge in that state.
No sale.
Better yet. The local sheriff should arrest any Federal Official that attempts to deny access to public lands.
A few good men left in government, but not enough!
But that would interfere with the president’s extortion racket!
But that would interfere with the president’s extortion racket!
Scott Walker would be an excellent TEA PARTY CANDIDATE for Pres.
in 2016 CRUZIN/WALKER or a WALKER/CRUZIN both have steel
spines. I would LOVE to see PALIN as press secretary payback would be a hoot!!! I would love nothing more than to see her day after day taking
the lying MSM on!!!
Walker is pro-amnesty. Or as he would say it “A path to citizenship.”
He did not support a government shutdown although he says he is against Obamacare and I believe him on that.
He seems to be moving to the center more and more lately I believe in anticipation of a presidential run.
I think he is doing a great job for WI and we really need him here if we are going to fight the federal government on a state level. I think as president he has a few issues that give me pause.I wouldn’t like to see him as a candidate.
Scott Walker has revealed his true colors as a business as usual politician.
Since you gave first hand experience with him governing I will certainly
take your word for it! I only watched from the outside during the union
uprising, he had a spine of steel! I am however totally against immigration
reform!! I live in Ca. or should I say northern Mexico!!!
So very disappointed to hear this about Walker, what the heck happens
to these folks that have such promise!! Tea Party fought so hard with
him, so very sad to hear from Wisconsin folks he is not all we all hoped
he would be!!!
Wisconsin voted for Obama so that means that Republican consultants of the Steve Schmidt variety tell the Walkers to move to the center to get re-elected.
I gave money to Walker for the recall election. I will not be giving him money or supporting him in the future.
An awful lot of Republicans in the Senate voted for cloture. The bad ones are to blame, partly.
Yeah baby....in your face FERAL Government. We the People of the States pay for these.
Hey Odogdung, this is still America not Kenya, pound sand.....
Go Sarah Palin!
