Sowell: Who Shut Down the Government? (great read)
Creators Syndicate ^ | October 3, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 10/03/2013 11:22:13 AM PDT by jazusamo

Even when it comes to something as basic, and apparently as simple and straightforward, as the question of who shut down the federal government, there are diametrically opposite answers, depending on whether you talk to Democrats or to Republicans.

There is really nothing complicated about the facts. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted all the money required to keep all government activities going — except for ObamaCare.

This is not a matter of opinion. You can check the Congressional Record.

As for the House of Representatives' right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States. All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that Congressmen there have a right to decide whether or not they want to spend money on a particular government activity.

Whether ObamaCare is good, bad or indifferent is a matter of opinion. But it is a matter of fact that members of the House of Representatives have a right to make spending decisions based on their opinion.

ObamaCare is indeed "the law of the land," as its supporters keep saying, and the Supreme Court has upheld its Constitutionality.

But the whole point of having a division of powers within the federal government is that each branch can decide independently what it wants to do or not do, regardless of what the other branches do, when exercising the powers specifically granted to that branch by the Constitution.

The hundreds of thousands of government workers who have been laid off are not idle because the House of Representatives did not vote enough money to pay their salaries or the other expenses of their agencies — unless they are in an agency that would administer ObamaCare.

Certain liberals are calling the Republican’s use of negotiation “extortion”.

Yep, and I’m sure most if not all of them know it’s a bald faced lie.

We, the People, don’t feel the need to fund our own destruction.

Extortion is an acceptable practice when it involves the federal government. The IRS depends upon extortion to operate. The federal government extorts states into accepting federal policies by withholding funds. It’s common practice. The radical leftists passed the Obamacare disaster, and Congress is perfectly within its rights to withhold funding for it. It is the Senate and Obama that are shutting down government to extort Congress into paying for their mess.

this is a straight forward strategy to me.

We are not following our constitution. The House allocates money. They did their job. The Senate decided to change the bill. This is wrong.

I say let the gov’t shut down, let the whole damn thing go down until they get this right.

The anarchists, the terrorists, the arsonists are the democrats and the WH.

Republoicans must stick together all of them.

Obamacare was the MOST PARTISAN and STATIST piece of legislation in GENERATIONS (and that is saying something) that was rammed down the throat of the American people WITHOUT a SINGLE vote of support from the opposition party.

It was passed on Christmas Eve by the senate and skirted several procedural rules.

The democrat majority leader of the house even told us we would have to “pass the bill in order to see what is in it”

Now the democrats expect the republicans to stand at attention, salute and follow this “law” without any opposition or fight.

Life doesn’t work that way. You want to play these games? Then let’s play. Republicans control the house and the purse strings of the republican and the obama the “uniter” can whine all he wants.

Actually - obama showed us the third way.

Don’t like a law - don’t follow it and ignore it.

DOMA
Immigration Laws
Gun Laws
Gay Marriage
etc.

The longer this drags on - the worse it is going to be for the democrats (and they know it). The sun will still shine. People will still live their lives.

Pretty soon it becomes apparent that life does not need a huge government. That maybe we can CUT government afterall.

And just wait until 100’s of “WWII vets storming the memorial” events happen and people just ignore obama’s silly rules.

You couldn’t be more correct.

With 0bummer it’s my way or the highway; laws, rules and precedents mean nothing to him.

Now the RAT leadership have fallen in lockstep with him and the GOP-e seem to go along too. That’s got to change and now is the perfect time for Boehner and the Republicans to change it.

How much of the Dem Senate-led shutdown was due to actual Senate votes, versus the Dem leaders simply sending the House bill back to the House?
