Insurance premium increases shock Charlotte consumers
The Charlotte Observer ^ | 10-6-13 | Karen Garloch

Across North Carolina, thousands of people have been shocked in recent weeks to find out their health insurance plans will be canceled at the end of the year – and premiums for comparable coverage could increase sharply.

One of them is George Schwab of Charlotte, who pays $228 a month for his family’s $10,000 deductible plan from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.

In a Sept. 23 letter, Blue Cross notified him that his current plan doesn’t meet benefit requirements outlined in the Affordable Care Act and suggested a comparable plan for $1,208 a month – $980 more than he now pays.

“I’m 62 and retired,” Schwab said. “This creates a tremendous financial burden for our family.

“The President told the American people numerous times that… ‘If you like your coverage, you can keep it,’” Schwab said. “How can we keep it if it has been eliminated? How can we keep it if the premium has been increased 430 percent in one year?”

Schwab and others who purchase insurance individually, and not through employer-sponsored group plans, are finding that the Affordable Care Act may be unaffordable for their families.

The new law, which rolled out to consumers this week with the opening of the online insurance marketplace, requires most Americans to buy insurance or pay a fine. It also sets minimum standards for health benefits and prohibits insurers from excluding or charging higher premiums for people who have pre-existing medical conditions.

“There’s good and bad in the law,” said Chris Blount, a Blue Cross agent wth Piedmont Benefits Group in Charlotte. “I think it’s bad that we can’t have as many choices as we’ve had before. But it’s not like you’re having to pay more and getting less. You’re having to pay more, and you’re getting more.”

The only thing that would be worse than the situation we are in would be seeing that liar and con man in the WH fine tuning the ACA.

Disagree.

I didn't like Romney much but Obama is far worse.

>>>Elections have consequences. Blame those repubs that stayed home cause Romney wasn’t conservative enough.

Yeah....Harry Reid would have allowed for a vote in the senate to repeal it.

How about we blame those republicans who keep putting up RINO's with no spine? Or are you one of them....

C’mon. This 62 year old and his family now have mandated birth control and pregnancy coverage.

Obamacare is the cable television of health care. You have to pay for 900 things you don’t want and won’t use just to get the 20 to 50 things you do want.

"I mean, you are a guy and probably your wife is about your age but you get maternity!"

As a guy, I'm really looking forward to my first exam by the OB/GYN. Should be interesting.

Just hope the doc's a female...

Not EVERYONE in MA is an idiot liberal. About 1/3 of the voters would consider themselves NOT liberal; some conservatives, some moderates.

Of course not everyone is a liberal.

But it's considered one of the most far-left states for a reason...the majority of voters vote left-wing.

“You’re having to pay more, and you’re getting more.”

Yeah that’s great. Unless a. you don’t want “more” and b. you can’t afford “more”.

I don’t know ANYBODY who has an extra $1000 per month just lying around.

Sex reassignment surgery, same-sex fertility coverage.

Good point. The problem is that you simply can't afford that "more." For instance, I'd love to own a Bugati Veyron. According to "Top Gear," it may be the best automobile ever built. If I were to buy it, I'd be getting something really great. The only problem is that I simply can't afford all the nifty stuff that goes into the car.

That's something that the leftists in the regime simply can't understand. Unlike government, people have to live within their budgets.

The ONLY fair solution is for every other hard working family out there to have to file bankruptcy too.

Did you ever watch crabs in a crab pot? If one manages to climb up to the exit and start to leave, others will grab him and pull on him. They will pull him back into the bowels of the trap. If he holds on hard enough, they will pull him until his claw comes off, still hanging on to the bars around the exit.

The Elite Republicans, like Rove, shoved Romney down everyone’s throats, just like McCain.

I blame the Elite Repubs not the Repubs who stayed home.

They want who they want and they will destroy any candidate who dares to run against their pick.

Obamacare was passed in 2010 and Dems had majority in both houses. We lost majority with candidates who fell to the question regarding rape and Republicans don’t teach their candidates how to answer it without shooting themselves in the foot.

I thought 61 year old retired people got it nearly free?

Or so says a so-called Republican that loves obamacare that the media has been parading out in public

“Romney did not invent Federalized health care. He signed a state bill that MA voters wanted.”

Obama didn’t write the Affordable Care Act, either; Repubs should be using this to attack everyone in the House & Senate that supported it (since Obama isn’t running for re-election). Hopefully these horror stories spread far & wide by the mid-term elections; they may help end some careers.

“We have to pass the law so we can see what’s in it...” - Nancy “Scarecrow” Pelosi

The fact that she was given a pass on that comment was a real indication that this country was doomed.

“No, for just $1000 more per month, this 62 year old retired man is paying for some parasite who has never held a job in her life, can now enjoy the benefits of maternity coverage.”

True. Plus her multiple children will cost the taxpayers over a million dollars to support to adulthood when they will vote for Democrat politicians who promise even more benefits.

I thought it was better to vote than stay home. Even if I had to hold my nose while voting for Romney.
