Walmart has no regrets about allowing a wild shopping spree at two of its Louisiana stores when an electronic glitch lifted the spending caps on the cards of food stamp recipients.

"We know we made the right choice," Walmart spokesman Kory Lundberg told ABCNews.com today.

The chain has no regrets even though Louisiana's Department of Children and Family Services said food stamp recipients should have been limited to $50 each during the emergency and that Walmart will have to pay the difference.

Lundberg declined to comment about how much the company may have lost or why it did not follow the emergency $50 limit.

Another Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling said, "Our focus was to continue serving our customers." Food stamp recipients jammed into Walmarts in Mansfield and Springhill Saturday when word of the glitch spread.

Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd said some customers were buying eight to ten grocery carts full of food.

The store in Mansfield temporarily closed because of overcrowding and Mansfield Chief of Police Gary Hobbs said some shoppers left with up to eight carts of food and then went back for more....

“How hard would it be to limit EBT purchases to $50.00 for a short period of time?”

Can you just imagine the screams of “RACISTS!!!!!” from the TV race hustlers had they dared to do that??

In Walmart’s defense, it’s just cheaper to let them steal, than face the cost of lawsuits and bad publicity. Welcome to The New Fascism.

Nope, according to an article earlier, it was corporate in Bentonville that made that decision.

I’ll venture to say it would have been blacks killing blacks. I doubt there were very many white employees. We KNOW all the shoppers were black.

jim-x, I can’t see myself ever going in another Walmart in the South. I’ve seen some clean ones in the North. Of course, there was something I DIDN’T see in the stores in the North.

Radio, they don’t think of it as stealing. They think of it as a gift.

jy8z, from what I’ve seen for every price “on sale” in a Walmart, there is an item that’s way over priced.

Do you think that would have mattered? I don't. Like I said it would have been immature, 250 pound babies gone wild wrecking havoc for free goodies.

The habitual entitlement class is going to get us all in a heap of trouble before all is done.

I read that when the EBT machines went back up, it was reading “no purchase limit” or something like that. Would that be correct, or did the machines register a $50.00 system-down limit and Walmart just ignored it because of the reaction of the lawless thugs in the store?

“Most large retailers are more afraid of bad publicity and lawsuits than they are about protecting merchandise.”

Right you are. They are also so concerned with internal theft that the general public is robbing them blind. I’ve seen shoplifters get gift cards so as not to create a “scene”

What's that old political saying? Tax what you want less of and subsidize what you want more of?

Methinks that Walmart just subsidized this behavior in its stores around the country.

"steal like that"

Many of them don't see is as stealing. They're just taking what is rightfully owed to them. At least that's the way they see it. But for sure, there are a number of them who are just thieves. And there's a sizable percentage of white people who would do the same thing. Obamatons of different colors.

“Businesses just raise prices to cover losses or increased costs”

Or that write off the loss as a tax deduction.

Whoever made this decision should be fired. The could have set a manual limit and limited the fraud. Stupid decision! I am sure the thought process was the taxpayer would be footing the bill.

Enough with the Negrophobia already. Didn’t you see that photo of the crowd at the Louisiana WalMart? At least 40% of them were white. And fat.

If I go to Wal-Mart and write a check for merchandise and I don’t have the money in my account, Wal-Mart will not only require me to pay for the merchandise in cash, but will charge me an extra fee for their trouble. How is this any different? Wal-Mart has the information for the ‘customers’ via use of their card. When will they be contacting them requesting reimbursement? If not, why the heck not?

And they set up a base of return customers. Those folks will go back with their EBT’s, hoping for a repeat performance of the glitch. It will live on in folk memory for a long time.

I suspect that most self supporting customers in the area don't go to that Walmart. We have three in the area, and one seems to self select the EBT crowd.

The recent activity will shift it even more.

Walmart has no regrets about allowing a wild shopping spree at two of its Louisiana stores when an electronic glitch lifted the spending caps on the cards of food stamp recipients.

The Walmart in NJ I stopped in was not honoring these cards, and had signs posted saying so.

If this Walmart had allowed the same nonsense to go on, I would never shop there again.
