At least 1,500 demonstrators with rifles and other firearms are expected to gather Saturday at the Alamo, in the face of forces they feel are at work to undermine their right to bear arms.
There's never been an event like this before at the Alamo, said Murdoch Pizgatti, an event coordinator who lives in the Dallas area and is co-founder of the gun-rights website dontcomply.com.
The rally is set to open at 10 a.m. with remarks by three political candidates and several gun-rights advocates. Demonstrators, many carrying rifles, shotguns or 19th-century pistols, will then walk a few blocks at about 12:30 p.m. to Travis Park for an open mic session.
Some demonstrators will have loaded firearms. Safety crews will check to make sure there's not a round in the chamber that could discharge, organizers said.
The group will return to the Alamo and disperse at about 2 p.m., although the event could run later, Pizgatti said.
The rally already has generated controversy. It is believed to be the first free-speech demonstration of its kind to be held in front of the mission-era church of the Alamo, site of a famed 1836 siege and battle for Texas independence and later a U.S. Army depot.

Any of the evil anti-self defense groups counter protesting this? Yes I called them evil, I’m sorry if you FOX news watching respectable conservatives find this “extreme” but I said it and I believe it the anti-self defense people are evil.
Doesn’t need to be empty. Just no round chambered in openly carried long guns. Chamber flag pops out quickly enough...
Were I still in Texas, i’d be there. As it is, a couple friends of mine are going...
Trust me, I am shamelss. That was for our friends at the N S A.
From another source:
From 1905 to 2011, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas organization kept the church
sacrosanct from events deemed inappropriate. But the state took control after allegations
of mismanagement by the Daughters. The decision on the long gun protest rested with Texas
Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who as a legislator was known for carrying a pistol in
his boot. The Marine veteran is running for lieutenant governor largely on a
single-barrel platform of gun rights.
Patterson acknowledged his office had not developed rules on use of the mission.
But he said he doesnt think the restrictions should be extensive.
Citizens who want to gather and exercise their First Amendment rights, who
behave in a lawful manner, Im not sure we have the lawful authority to say no,
even if we wanted to, he said Wednesday.
As for the long gun rally, Patterson, who as a senator wrote the states
concealed handgun law, says he plans to explain to San Antonio city attorney
afterward that the citys ordinance is unconstitutional.
San Antonio officials disagree but say they anticipate no problems Saturday.
We are expecting it to be a peaceful gathering and within the limits of the law,
Police Chief William McManus said in an emailed statement.
The lakes in Texas are chuck full.
As a Virginian I wish I could have attended this. Texas has some of the worst gun carry laws in the country. Its a sad state of affairs when Delaware, New Hampshire, and Vermont can all boast that they have better gun laws than Texas.
You can imagine our lakes in the People’s Republic of Maryland!
"Upate: 9:45 a.m.
Organizers expect more than 1,000 people to show up Saturday carrying rifles, shotguns and antique firearms to protest a city ordinance that limits where gun owners can take their weapons. As of 9:45 a.m., there were about 300. A heavy police presence was also expected. Two uniformed officers were spotted at the rally at around 10 a.m., shaking hands with demonstrators."...
