Posted on 10/23/2013 1:44:50 PM PDT by null and void
Two Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy walking with what appeared to be a high-powered weapon Tuesday afternoon in Santa Rosa, sheriff's Lt. Dennis O'Leary said.
The replica gun resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph released by the sheriff's office. Deputies would only learn after the shooting that it wasn't an actual firearm, according to O'Leary.
After spotting the boy, the deputies called for backup and repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun, O'Leary said in a news release. It wasn't clear whether he pointed the replica assault rifle at the deputies or made any type of threatening gesture. The sheriff's office referred calls to the Santa Rosa Police Department, which did not immediately return a call for comment.
O'Leary said the deputies fired several rounds from their handguns immediately after issuing the orders to drop the rifle.
"First, I heard a single siren and within seconds I heard seven shots go off, sounded like a nail gun, is what I thought it was," he said.
The boy fell to the ground on top of the rifle, according to O'Leary. He said the deputies ordered him to move away before approaching him and putting him in handcuffs.
They began administering first aid and called for paramedics, who pronounced him dead at the scene. Deputies also found a plastic handgun in the boy's waistband, O'Leary said. The deputies, who have not been identified, have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard after a shooting, O'Leary said.
The family was back at their mobile home Tuesday night after identifying the boy's body
The newspaper quoted the boy's mother, Sujey Annel Cruz Cazarez, as saying, ""Why did they kill him? Why?"

Bad training is worse than no training at all.
So, do the police shoot each other? After all, they have guns too!
Prediction: Dems will fight to eliminate the sale of any toy guns.
And, to continue, he didn't respond because he didn't think what he was carrying was a gun. It was a replica. "You talkin' to me?"
You couldn’t pay me enough to be a police officer anywhere these days.
Or the kid just froze. I can see that happening. Maybe law enforcement needs to have the same rules of engagement our military had in Iraq, they cannot fire unless fired at first and then not without permission from central command.
And to think that a close friend and I used to cart our rifles across town to get to a forested area where we could shoot....with no one even giving us a second look....and in Illinois, no less.
Such are the results of liberalism.
To answer her question, they killed him because they could. And to send a message to the slaves.
Sounds like the Deputies around here.
Out on a large farm, in the middle of a crop field, shooting crows with birdshot.
Was treated like a bank robber.
When the cops treat the bad people and the good people equally abusive, who is going to “support their local..or otherwise...police?
Sure was not going to contribute to the cop charities after that.
I can see that happening, too. When confronted by the police, he probably was surprised and didn't know how to react. Of course, there are real criminals as young as 13 years old, but based on the details, it doesn't sound like this boy was a threat to anyone. He was just walking with pretend, plastic toy guns.
Maybe the teen had a death wish or he was mentally retarded or he didn’t speak English??
They didn’t have any dogs around to shoot.
If only they had stayed in their cars....
Apparently there was no dog for the SWAT Team Wannabe’s to shoot...
I would opine that they started shooting right after saying “Drop he gun”. Which it would have to be proved to me they said. Just as soon as 50 or 75 backups got there, they started shooting. and high fived each other,”We got that Mexican son of a bitch”. Along the lines of the former Marine the SWAT murdered in his house in Arizona or maybe in new Mexico.
I asked a local cop if I could by tickets to the Tempe policemans ball. He said the the Tempe PD didn’t have balls
I can belive cops might plant a gun to cover up, but a plastic gun? Along with the fake AK-47? Not enough facts here to make the case either for or against the cops or the boy. But no matter. Let the "All cops are pigs and jack-booted-thugs" crowd have their say here.
I posted this article over at FB FR and all i got was comments defending the cops i was quite shocked.
If a cop murdered my son like that, I’d kill the entire local police force.
From the article:
Andy Lopez was an eighth-grader at Lawrence Cook Middle School, where assistant principal Linsey Gannon said he played trumpet in the band. "Andy was a very loved student, a very popular, very handsome young man, very smart and capable,'" she said Wednesday.
The day is young.
Can’t to see the dash cams....
My bet it was under 5 seconds from “drop the weapon” to filling the child with holes...
There exists all the facts we need to know. The police showed up to a scene with a badge and REAL guns and killed an unarmed boy. It's the responsibility of the police to determine if any real threat exists.
If the Police show up and shoot an innocent person it's the fault of the police. No other facts need to be determined.
Did the guns have orange tips? Or did the kids use markers to make them black like we used to do?
See! He really WAS dangerous. /s
I thought that all toy guns had to have an orange plastic tip on them. I’ve not seen a toy rifle that HASN’T had one in years. Even the pistols that shoot suction cups are all orange. Not just the tips.
No other facts need to be determined.
You’re going by one internet news report and you own prejudices against cops. Or were you actually there?
“No other facts...??” Well gee. Why not you and that clown upthread go and kill every member of the police department then for what they did.
Then the gangbangers started painting the tip of their guns orange and it brought everything back to square 1.
So common procedure now shoot first ask questions later.
I respect the police but some of the Sonoma county sheriffs are real yahoos.
Oh Good, the Bay Area Commies dropped another Evil Miscreant.
The cops here aren’t much different then their Bolshevik Masters.
The kid probably was an illegal and didn’t speak English. Sonoma County has tons of them. They’re the majority in the schools there now.
What a bunch of trigger happy thugs. I gotta tell my kid to stay off the street with his Nerf guns, god knows what these idiots would do.

California Sheriff’s Deputies Shoot, Kill 13-Year-Old
This is what happpens when Obummer arms and trains moslem terrorists to kill kids and trains the local cops to kill children they are supposed to be defending.
“What`s the difference?”
If the facts are as presented here, the cops appear to be in the wrong. Just use logic. Why would someone (especially someone obviously juvenile) intending to do harm blithely walk down the sidewalk with an AR-15? No reports of shots fired, no reports of a kid causing damage,. no reports of an argument or shouting or other disturbances, the cops just happened to roll up on a kid walking down the sidewalk with what appeared to be a weapon. They were behind the cover of their squad car, the kid was standing/walking on the sidewalk.
Seriously think about how it went down. The cops seriously thought were “lucky” enough to roll up on a potential massacre just before it was about to happen? But they had time to call for and wait for backup. That’s enough time to survey the scene and think about the strangeness of the circumstance they were in. What happened during that time that led them to believe they or someone else was in immediate danger?
Im sure his older brother will have weed in his room, therfore, its a good shoot in their eyes . . .
Well, that answered tons of questions going through my mind...
In todays social and political atmosphere, I would never allow a child of any age out in public with a replica firearm of any kind. Period.
World class stupidity.
No further comment.
They show a picture of the weapon, I would bet they removed the orange tip. Also there is no indication of size. The toy is not full size. The AK-47 toy is 26 inches long and real one is over a half of foot longer. But does the above look like this? They really can't tell the difference between plastic and metal. Or what a toy looks like compared to the real thing?
Here is what happened.
But until we find a way to reverse the wannabe loud fascists among us, real fascism, not the hippy kind, we need to adapt to the reality. Getting shot by cops is more common and likely today than being shot by criminals.
Aside from the gang culture, that is.
Nor me....and I was one for 30 years.
High Fives all around. It is an easy way to get an extra paid vacation. That has to be part of the motivation for these things.
You know that permission would be automatically given. These fellows need their vacation time.
Shooting a dog doesn’t get rewarded with a paid vacation. It is a satisfying experience but doesn’t have that extra motivation attached.
SOP. That is how they are trained now. Sometimes they forget to say, "Drop the gun!" but they always finish off by saying, "I felt threatened,"
I was surprised that it was deputies rather than city cops but then I noticed that it was California.
The boy was playing with toy guns. He deserved to die.
Neighbor kids came out of the woods by my house wearing airsoft ‘armor’ and with airsoft guns. From 30+ feet it all looks real.
(I heard the noise of their shots and knew they were airsoft so it didn’t surprise me.)
With 12 year olds shooting teachers at school, this could also have been in the back of the craw of these cops.
Who knows if he pointed it at them or not.
My Godson is a LEO in a small midwestern town.. These days ya never know who may pass thru.. what may pop up on the boonies..
Thanks for your service.
Things like this did not happen 50 years ago. Police were not trained to shoot first then determine what the situation was. Police were not trained with targets printed with pretty women and children on them as they are now. Police were not trained that their safety utterly trumps any other consideration and that their first impression governs their necessary response. Police 50 years ago were not trained to react as if they were occupying troops in a dangerous and hostile population and every third person had an explosive vest on.
I would bet dollars to doughnuts the shooters spent their youth playing Dungeons and Dragons and shootemup war games like Grand Theft Auto. To them the world is a video game. They have no consciences and no morals at all. The bad guy pops up and you shoot him. These are who our drone operators are, too. I expect that soon drones will be used in situations like this so as not to put police officers in danger. When that happens they don’t even have to acknowledge that they shot the kid. They can decide whether to claim the shoot based on whether or not they feel the need to intimidate a neighborhood or a family.
Well, you obviously speak English, but the other two might apply based on this comment.
