Two new polls sure to shake up the Virginia gubernatorial race suggest that longshot Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is mounting a last minute comeback, prompting front-runner Terry McAuliffe to bring in a big gun to keep his hopes alive: the original Comeback Kid, former President Clinton.
A new Wenzel Strategies survey of likely voters suggests a 1-point race, with McAuliffe at 41 percent and Cuccinelli at 40 percent. Other polls have given McAuliffe a double digit lead.
But Wenzel echos a new Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday showing McAuliffe’s lead shrinking to just 4 points.
What’s key about the Wenzel poll is that it built a turnout model based on how Virginia actually votes, weighting the sample at 28 percent Democrats, 26 percent Republicans and 46 percent independents. “This reflects the swing-state tradition of Virginia that has lately leaned toward Republicans in statewide, non-presidential years, but has tilted to the Democrats in recent presidential elections,” they said.
“This reflects a slight tightening of the race,” added Wenzel.
The pollsters suggested that Cuccinelli's assault on the unpopular Obamacare is helping his case to Virginians. McAuliffe, who has embraced Obamacare, is spending the week campaigning with his mentor, Clinton, in a bid to get his side excited and show up at the polls next week.
Clinton and McAuliffe have been desperately urging voters to join their bid. "Terry needs us," Clinton pleaded in an email. "No one is running for president this year and we're still a year from the midterm elections. So some people might be tempted to think this election is less important than last year's. Don't be one of those people," added Clinton.
Most polls have found that voters are turned off by the gubernatorial race and generally don’t like the candidates.
The Wenzel Strategies survey shows voters are split on both McAuliffe and Cuccinelli. While 45 percent said they have a favorable opinion of McAuliffe, 46 percent have an unfavorable opinion of him. For Cuccinelli, 47 percent hold a favorable opinion, while 50 percent have an unfavorable opinion of him.
Unless it’s +7 or more, he’s within the margin of theft and has no chance.

Both officials later agreed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in penalties for their actions, and the union itself had to reimburse its pension fund by nearly $5 million.
In one deal, McAuliffe and the fund officials created a partnership to buy a large block of commercial real estate in Florida. McAuliffe put up $100 for the purchase, while the pension fund put up $39 million. Yet McAuliffe got a 50-percent interest in the deal; he eventually walked away with $2.45 million from his original $100 investment. In another instance, the pension fund loaned McAuliffe more than $6 million for a real-estate development, only to find that McAuliffe was unable to make payments for nearly five years.
In the end, the pension fund lost some of its money, McAuliffe moved on to his next deal, and fund officials found themselves facing the Labor Department's questions.

Rasmussen today shows a significant tightening as well. Last week, McAuliffe was ahead by 17, today it’s 7. It’s all about the Big Mo now! KC is finally drawing blood against Fast Terry the Bagman.
Maybe there’s a sliver of hope yet.

One would think with the disaster of Obamacare looming over every democommie’s head, this would be a slam dunk for Cuccinelli and every other Republican running...

Hampton University poll out today has it McAuliffe 42, Cuccinelli 36, Sarvis 12.

Sarvis is taking 6% more republicans compared to last month’s poll while just 2% more democrats.
Roanoke poll is all over the place. It was McAuliffe +5 last month and now its up to +15 with Sarvis taking 10%.

Yup. If that "Libertarian" wasn't in the race, I would be far more confident of a Cuccinelli win.
I really think this is the democRATs' new strategy in a lot of these races: Throw in some 3rd party guy to siphon votes from the Republican. It's been working like a charm for several election cycles now...

Had a business trip to Quantico, VA, yesterday. Drove up from the Tidewater area, through the heart of the 1st Congressional District, which is typically an R+6 region (or better). Support for Cuccinelli seems to be very strong, and it looks like he will run ahead of Romney last year. He needs to pull at least 60-65% of the vote in the corridor running from Yorktown up to Fredericksburg, and up his margins in places like Virginia Beach.
The Old Dominion is a strange place, electorally. Look at last year’s presidential results and you see a sea of red, but all the Dims have to do is carry the DC suburbs handily, and carry places like Norfolk, Newport News and metro Richmond.
Cuccinelli still has a ways to go, but I’m feeling better about this race. He needs to keep hammering McAuliffe on Obamacare, and it would be nice if he could run some last-minute TV ads reminding voters that his latest surrogate (Barry O) is the architect of this disaster, and the Clintons tried to implement a similar mess 20 years ago.
I’d say Oloser is hurting Fast Terry. His healthcare debacle is getting worse and worse.

Is there any way we can get to Sarvis and have him bow out? Maybe that’s where our energy should be directed? Ask him to encourage his supporters to vote for Cuchinelli?
