I tend to agree, after Quadrophenia, most of the songs seemed to be Pete whining about being an aging rock star. I even read once where “The Who By Numbers” was one long suicide note, still though, some good songs on it, like “Slip Kid.”
I agree, although I thought It’s Hard was more Pete coming to terms with aging and that the youth banner he’d dropped in favor of introspective whining in the 70’s was being picked up again in light of what you learn as you gain experience.
I have no evidence of this, but such songs as “Why did I fall for that,” “A man is a man,” and of course “Cry if you want,” all play into that scenario quite well. Also “It’s your turn” is a challenge to the snot nosed kids coming up through the rock ranks.
Other than Kenney’s drumming, I think it’s their best album since Quadrophenia. I was disappointed that, now that Pete seemed to have some direction again, he proceeded to quit. Well, the “first” quit...

I think though “White City” is one of his best. I would have killed to see him on that tour with Dave Gilmour.
Yeah, that would have been something. My two favorite guitarists, together on one bill. Heaven!
Last saw The Who in ‘06, I think, when they played Calgary on their “Endless Wire” tour. Great show! And they made DVD’s of each show available, which was even better!

Saw them in Houston in 82,it wasn’t a farewell tour
Maybe they toured twice, cause I saw them in Seattle in 82 - September, I think - and that tour was billed as their final tour.
Of course we know how that turned out! And glad it did!
