Vigil held for South Bay teen who took his own life: Friends say teen was victim of bullying

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A vigil was held Saturday evening for an Otay Ranch High School student who took his own life.

Hundreds gathered at the spot where 16-year-old Steven Liu died Friday night. Police say Liu jumped off the bridge in front of Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista.

"He was just too young," said friend Eric Gonzalez. "He had a lot of things to live for."

Friends gathered to pray and remember the teen that loved running cross country for his school and had a passion for photography.

"When I see him, he's always happy," said friend Kenneth Gervacio. "I didn't think anything like this would happen. I know kids were picking on him and that was very tough. I just didn't know it would be to this length."

Friends say Liu was often picked on at school.

"Everybody just kept on picking on him, just telling him, like really mean names," said Gonzalez.

John Melgar used to run cross country with Liu and said other students would call him names and harass him.

Melgar said, "People took advantage of him … They'd always ask for things. They'd tell him like, 'Oh, can you carry this for me' and he'd just carry it because he's a really nice guy."

Adrian Agbuia told 10News his brother was in class with Liu last week when Liu had a breakdown.

"He just finally lost it," said Agbuia. "All the bullying finally got to him and he was just banging his head against the door in the classroom."

I wonder if there are more suicides related to bullying these days (than in the past) or if the cause of the suicides is, nowadays, a little more out in the open rather than being dealt with in the hush-hush manner of prior decades.

He was very likely being molested by an adult male. The media always tries to redirect what is really happening with the homosexual agenda.

Victims of bullying need to see Ender’s Game. In one scene he beats a bully senseless by kicking him once he is down. When asked why, he replied, “To win all the future fights today”.

Kids aren’t taught to stand up to bullies anymore. They are told to run away and tell an adult. All good and fine until the bully has you cornered out of sight and hearing of adults.

Or until your child finally stands up and the bully and their hoodlum friends lie and say your kid started it and your kid gets kicked out of school and almost arrested.

Kids are taught not to fight for any reason zero tolerance is BS!

Small private school or home school. No kid under the age of 18 understands how to deal with bullies (shoot some big burly football players can’t) and understand they are worthless human beings and once out of the public school cesspool you can defend yourself.

If I hear of any bullying of my kids, I’ll go to war with the school.

I did 12 years of schooling a few decades ago. NO ONE in the entire district in those 12 years committed suicide. We had 3 deaths 2 from serious medical illness and one car accident.
We had bullies. We also had the answer. They ended up getting their asses kicked and the bullying stopped.
We had no school shootings EVER yet we had a huge portion of students living in “the country” and rifles and shotguns and bows were plentiful in vehicles during hunting seasons.

I was bullied in the 7th grade (1964), worked the summer at a dairy farm and put on 20 pounds of muscle. The first day of 8th grade here comes the same jerk again trying to dump my books, etc. until I broke his nose and knocked him on his butt with one punch.
A few years later in high school, there were two suicides by students. One was over a girlfriend and the other was a boy who was being molested by a relative. Such a waste of youth.

We had the Irish Christian Brothers. Start some crap at school and your parents normally picked you up at the ER. Wrong? Maybe. But no bullying no suicide and no wiseasses at school.

Ahhh bullying. I’m glad to see that we, as a country, have moved on from Ritalin, Adderall and other pharmaceuticals as a catch-all. Now its bullying....

government is the problem

If government had stayed out of education then schools would be mostly online Internet classes now(1/100 the cost) or home schooling. government schools are an abomination. that most Americans thinks it's of for government to get involved in educating our children boggles my mind.

now government is getting more involved(totally taking over) healthcare. how did that work out in gov schools, public housing projects? didn't work at all cause socialism/government can never work.

hey idiot democrats , government is an evil cancer that in no way should be involved in education, healthcare etc. you morons. the only thing gov should be involved in is in military and border control (at federal level), some police and courts at local level and that's it idiots

I was bullied in school (70’s). Branded as a gay by a lying friend in 7th grade, it followed me for years. I was a very small person and wasn’t physically able to stop it.

I remember the day I stood in my parent’s bedroom with Dad’s pistol in my hand looking at it. What stopped me I don’t know.

I’m 54 now and those years of bullying still affect me.

Glad you reconsidered. People get caught up in the moment, but it's a truism that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And it's a "solution" that creates a lot of mental trauma for close friends and relatives.

Maybe these are sea stories, but Jewish oldsters from NYC I used to know (they're in a better place now) said they used to have to, during the 20's and 30's, literally run the gauntlet of Irish and Italian neighborhoods while going to school. They dashed through those areas in order to avoid beatings at the hands of Irish and Italian kids lying in wait for them. (They weren't really gangs in the modern sense or even delinquents - just kids with too much time on their hands). The beatings weren't severe - just bruises - and I suppose they might have paled compared to the corporal punishment routinely administered at home for misbehavior or just because pa was in a bad mood.

In the book, Ender killed him with that final kick.

His name is very symbolic.

He was likely bullied to death for being Asian and therefore, not a member of California’s PC class.
