If You Want a Conservative Child: Five ways to ensure your child won’t cross over to the left.
National Review ^ | 11/12/2013 | Dennis Prager

Posted on 11/12/2013 5:48:09 AM PST by SeekAndFind

In my last column, I proposed some explanations for why many conservative parents have left-wing children.

In a nutshell, American parents who hold traditional American values — such as belief in small government as the basis of liberty, or a God-based moral code, or American military strength as the greatest contributor to world peace and stability, or American exceptionalism, not to mention the man-woman definition of marriage or the worth of a human fetus — are at war with almost every influence on their children’s lives. This includes, most important, the media and the schools.

Here, then, are some suggestions for raising a child with American — i.e., conservative — values:

First, non-left-wing parents need to understand that if they do not articulate their values on a regular basis, there is a good chance that after one year, let alone four years, at college, their child will adopt left-wing views and values. Do not think for a moment that values are automatically transmitted. A hundred years ago they may have been — because the outside world overwhelmingly reaffirmed parents’ traditional values — but no longer.

You have to explain to your children — repeatedly — what America and you stand for. (That, if I may note, is why I wrote Still the Best Hope and why I started PragerUnversity.com).

Second, they need to know what they will be taught at college — and now in many high schools — and how to respond. When they are told from Day One at college that America and its white citizens are inherently racist, they need to know how to counter this libel with these truths: America is the least racist society in the world; more black Africans have immigrated here of their own volition than were brought here forcibly to be slaves; and “racist” is merely one of many epithets, such as “sexist,” “intolerant,” “xenophobic,” “homophobic,” “Islamophobic,” and “bigoted,” that the Left uses instead of arguments.

Third, when possible, it is best that your child not go to college immediately after high school. One reason colleges are able to indoctrinate students is that students enter college young and unworldly. It is very rare that adult students are convinced to abandon their values and become left-wing. Why? Because they have lived life and are much less naïve. For example, someone with life experience is far more likely than a kid just out of high school to understand that the best formula for avoiding poverty is personal responsibility — get a job, get married, and then have children — not government help.

Teenagers who spend a year before going to college working — in a restaurant, for a moving company, at an office — will mature far more than they would after a year at college. And maturity is an inoculation against leftism.

If your home is Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, or Mormon, another option for the year after high school is to have your child devote a year to studying religion in some formal setting. The more your child knows, lives, and adheres to the principles of any of these religions, the less likely he or she will convert to leftism, which has been the most dynamic religion of the last hundred years. For example, it is a fundamental belief of each of these Judeo-Christian religions that the root of evil is within the evildoer. But it is a fundamental belief of leftism that people murder, steal, and rape overwhelmingly because of outside influences such as poverty and racism. The moment your child understands that people who commit evil — not poverty or racism — are responsible for it, he or she cannot be a leftist.

Fourth, don’t be preoccupied with instilling high self-esteem in your child. It is the Left that believes that self-esteem is a child’s right, something that parents and society owe children. Conservatives believe that everyone, including children, must earn self-esteem. Indeed, the belief in earning — rather than in being given — is conservative.

Fifth, teach character. The Left has essentially defined a good person as one who holds progressive social positions — on race, the environment, taxes, health care, etc. That is why the Left, including the feminist Left, could so adore Bill Clinton, who regularly used his positions of power to take advantage of women: He held progressive positions.

If your child recycles, or walks five or ten kilometers on behalf of breast cancer, that is lovely. But if your child refuses to cheat on tests or befriends an unpopular kid at school, that is character. And teaching that definition of character is more often done in a conservative (usually a religiously conservative) context.

It is not all that hard to produce a son or daughter able to withstand left-wing indoctrination. You just have to understand that it doesn’t happen automatically.

Sorry, but the number one thing you can do is simply this, keep your kid out of public schools.. send them to a private or parochial school during their formative years, so that by the time they get to college they already are well aware of what the liberal dogma is and how to logically counter it.

PERIOD.

Beat me to it home school, a private school that meets your ideals.

Do not fall for the liberal idea that you can not tell your child what to then as they get older advise them what path to take.

Liberals want your child to run wild so they can fill their heads with liberal mush.

Too bad the Occupy camps are gone. A five-minute tour with clear sinuses would likely have done the trick.

I would say it starts much earlier than in College...watch out in any public school....they will start to indoctrinate your child fast and early...I will say its tough today to raise a good kid..to many bad options out there for them to fall off the path....video games..music..drugs..teachers preaching values..many many things to destroy your child..

Take your children to church, and I don’t mean a Unitarian one. Teach them how to shoot, safely that is.

I grew up in a rural farm community. Despite my youthful “escapades” I never really had any liberalism in me. I just wasn’t exposed to it.

At worst I just didn’t think about things like abortion but when I finally did, it never even occurred to me that it might be OK.

Don’t forget about doing “online University” instead of going to University. This works great for many disciplines although it might not be the best for some. Accounting is one that works well online in my experience. Computer Science and Math are likely good too.

What a child needs is DISCIPLING.

And the parent decides who is going to do that - themselves, a private school teacher, a public school teacher, etc.

The best way to make sure that your child is getting discipled with your family’s values is for him to be educated by your family.

One of the many good things you can do for your children. Get rid of the TV spend time with your children.

I hear to many so called conservative parents tell me you can't give your children advice or tell them what they do.

Why not as long as the advice is good and solid you should be giving them advice.

If they don't take that is their problem.

it is a liberal ideal not to give your children good advice so they can fill their heads with liberal mush.

And don’t let a child become a vegan or vegetarian at a young age! It’s bad for a kiddie’s development and it’s underlying principles are pernicious and wrong-headed.

This was rebutted by James Kirkpatrick. Basically Mr. Prager should come to realize that ideology is political theology based on crank ideas of humanity most notably the fraud of the blank slate theory.

I raised 4 kids without ever talking politics.

All four are conservative, responsible, hardworking souls. They understand that actions have consequences. They are accomplished professionals with families of their own. They all volunteer in the community, one donates his skills in 3rd world countries.

For me, raising them was the best part of my life. No parent could be more proud than I am of them.

And if you live in rural or suburban neighborhoods it’s good to join the Four H clubs. Teach your kids how to bake and sew. Give them piano lessons and/or ballet lessons. There are lots of ways to keep children occupied than video games.

Need to add: Restrict and/or monitor TV, movies, music, etc., MSM BS, that will influence liberal thinking. The child does need some exposure to this mush, however, accompanied by an conservative adult’s explanation as to what is really going on, in order to prevent naivety and prepare the child for adulthood.
Example: my liberal-minded daughter now has a liberal-minded teen-age daughter who claims she is bisexual.

Re: Private Schools
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Choose with care! There are many flamingly Marxist K-12 private schools.

The very best option is to homeschool if at all possible.

Please remember that nearly every K-12 teacher in this nation was trained by godless Marxists in Marxist run colleges and universities. Even if the private school is basically conservative the Marxist training will very likely leak through into school policies and into the classroom.

I grew up in the city in a heavy Polish-Irish Catholic neighborhood. I had to break away from the pro-union establishment and was essentially black-balled. I had the same views on abortion as you. I still don’t see how it is seen as OK by liberals and on the left it is now a sacrament.

I don't think breast cancer needs any advocates or supporters. I think it would be better to walk five or ten kilometres to defeat breast cancer.
