Full title: Rude Awakening for Federal Way Woman Who Got Shout-Out From President – Can’t Afford Obamacare Policy After All
Recognized by President: Jessica Sanford of Federal Way.
OLYMPIA, Nov. 17.—Jessica Sanford, the Federal Way woman who got a shout-out from President Obama last month with her fan letter for the Affordable Care Act, got a rather rude awakening last week. Turns out she doesn’t qualify for a tax credit after all.
At least that’s what the letter said that she got from the state. Now she says her dream of affordable health insurance has gone poof. She can’t afford it. She’ll have to go without. “I’m really terribly embarrassed,” she says. “It has completely turned around on me. I mean, completely.”
Chalk it up to a bollixed-up state website that apparently still has major problems. Originally it said Sanford and her child would get a whopping tax credit that would reduce their total premium to $169 a month. Now the state is telling her it goofed – twice – and she has to pay full ticket.
Obama related Sanford’s story in remarks from the Rose Garden last Oct. 21: “I recently received a letter from a woman named Jessica Sanford in Washington state, and here’s what she wrote. ‘I am a single mom, no child support, self-employed, and I haven’t had health insurance for 15 years because it is too expensive. My son has ADHD and requires regular doctor visits, and his meds alone cost $250 a month. I have had an ongoing tendinitis problem due to my line of work that I haven’t had treated. Now, finally, we get to have coverage because of the ACA for $169 a month. I was crying the other day when I signed up. So much stress lifted.’

Great analysis but $400.00 per month is a lot of money when these fools expect healthcare for free.

BTW, the article goes on to say her son is covered now by Medicaid for $30 a month. She is complaining because she was forced to put him on medicaid before the calculations for a credit based on income and dependents which removed him from not having medical insurance, he had medicaid. Now she has to pay for insurance without benefit of a credit. So ya see, here we have another person who believed this was going to be “free” insurance and who cannot get by on a 50K income as a self employed court reporter...too bad. Meanwhile, she does not yet know she will have to fork over $500 fine for not having insurance if she goes that way, ah, the government givith and the government taketh away more!
Be nice, that is $400 that cannot go for the Volvo.

guess she’s another who is for everyone having health care as long as she doesn’t have to pay for it....guess this includes her own.
The actual premium pricing I have seen has been significantly higher than what the Kaiser calculator predicts. Their estimates may not always be accurate.

Whatever the actual premium, I believe people who get subsidies will get enough to knock it down to a standard rate, for a given income level, family size and age group. People who aren't eligible for subsidies get sticker shock. Upper middle income families that buy their own insurance are in for rate shock.
But she also probably has to pay for the $250 per month of ADHD medication under that plan, since the deductible won't be reached. So the monthly cash flow out is $650 per month before any other medical costs, which she will also have to pay out of pocket, except for the zero cost checkups, vaccinations, etc.
Also, as a self employed person she has to pay all of the FICA and Medicare out of her income. So instead of seeing a 7.65% tax rate, she pays 15.3% off the top directly to the federal government. That's another $625 per month, $312 more than somebody who is not self-employed pays.
Finally, for all its problems, Medicaid is usually a generous insurance program from the user's point of view with low or zero deductibles and copays. So Medicaid is way more appealing than a typical ACA insurance plan. The next bad effect we'll see will be people who adjust their income to stay under the thresholds which cause them to lose their subsidized or free plans.

Mom needs to take away the X-Box and hand the kid a basketball. For less than the $250/month she's spending on meds, she could enroll him in a YMCA program after school.
Regarding my 3YO grandson, the entire family (parents and all 4 grandparents) is in agreement that we will not allow any diagnosis of ADD. When he comes to our house (usually 1-2 days a week), he never naps, because he's having too much fun. He gets plenty of physical activity, thanks to his 11YO uncle and his Opa. lol - He keeps me young, too.
My son just completed football, in two weeks basketball season starts. With sports and Boy Scouts, we're doing our best to maintain a high level of activity.
“Four days after President Obama made his address, the state health exchange publicly revealed a grevious error – its tax-credit calculations were all wrong. The state had been submitting monthly income information to the federal data hub, but the federal computers were expecting an annual figure. Suppose a person claimed an income of $50,000 a year — the tax credit was based on an income of $4,166 a year. The higher the income, the bigger the error. Brokers say they caught the mistake right off the bat and tried flagging it to the state’s attention, but for some reason it took the state three weeks to acknowledge it. So everyone who purchased a subsidized health insurance policy through the Washington state exchange prior to Oct. 23 was quoted too low a rate. The mistake involved 4,600 policies covering 8,000 people – Sanford’s policy was one of them.”
In King County, WA average rents for a 2 bedroom apartment are $1200 a month. After taxes, she probaby clears $3k. That doesn’t leave a lot of money to pay for power, water, maybe a car paymnet, and raise a growing kid. $400 a month would be a big hit.
That is true, and when they see how limited their coverage is in many areas they will be stunned. Apparently many of the large insurance providers have established new coverage networks with far fewer providers, and they don't provide any out of network coverage. When those upper middle income families realize that they can't send their children to specialty hospitals, or go to someplace like Cedars Sinai when one of them needs brain surgery, they'll be furious.
Don’t count on it...
