I am not referring to the thieves. You are right, the thieves can go to hell. If somebody not connected with the theft found what appeared to be scrap metal and took it home then I feel sorry for them.

Very common. There is even a series of movies about it. "Lola la trailera"

You can buy them at Walmart.

The atomic energy agency said the cobalt has an activity of 3,000 curries, or Category 1, meaning "it would probably be fatal to be close to this amount of unshielded radioactive material for a period in the range of a few minutes to an hour."

Some writer or editor doesn't know the difference between hot spices and radioactive materials.

My Spanish is a little rusty, but I get the essence of it, and I will probably be taking my conspiracy hat off at this point. Based on the prevalence I’m more inclined to believe these unwitting cargo rustlers simply bit off more than they could chew.

My guess is that since they got radiation poisoning then they didn’t have a clue what they stole. If they were serious terrorists they would not have opened the container like these guys did.

But this incident might give some real terrorists some ideas.

Karma for the thieves? Could be misfortune for some person who innocently happened by and investigated, I guess.

“Picturing the scene in Indiana Jones when the Nazis open up the Ark of the Covenant.”
It reminds me of the Star Trek NG episode where Data is collecting the radioactive satellite pieces and the people on the planet get sick. One of my favorite episodes.

Also similar to a plot device in Alas Babylon. The local hood who stole the radioactive jewel loot from a high end shop just outside the nuked FL city.

I read a similar story in Robert Gales’ book Radiation - what you need to know about it. Most of those that came in contact with the cobalt 60 from the dismantled machine died - they received a fatal and unfixable dose of radiation.

Those movies are a scream. There is a lot of scheming and thievery and bad stuff, which she defeats. What they do, unwittingly, is depict most Mexicans as larcenous bastards. Very brawny gal.

I think this latest theft was committed by a bunch of ignorant peasants who would not recognize a radioactive warning symbol if it bit them in the DNA. Very sad and very stupid. But you do have to wonder why the Mexicans chose to put their nuclear waste so near to the national capital. It is as if we put ours in a depository at Woodbridge, VA.

Either way, the sentence rings true.
