Most chicken sold in stores is contaminated, Consumer Reports says

A report released Thursday indicates that just about all chicken sold in U.S. stores contains harmful bacteria, and nearly half are tainted with a so-called superbug that's resistant to antibiotics.

The Consumer Reports study, its most comprehensive to date on poultry, tested raw chicken breasts purchased at retail outlets nationwide for six bacteria, then checked for antibiotic resistance. The results showed nearly half of the samples were contaminated with at least one bacterium resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics, what's known as a superbug. Slightly more than 10 percent were tainted with two superbugs.

That finding is cause for alarm, said Urvashi Rangan, a toxicologist and executive director of Consumer Reports National Research Center.

"We're in a public health crisis," Rangan said. "Pharmaceutical companies are not making new antibiotics."

This is great news for me, since it means that I'm completely immune to this bacteria.

How about if we cook the chicken before we eat it?

Radiate it. I’d pay a little more for a radiated bird.

Good thing most people cook it before they eat it.

All raw meat contains some level of bacteria. All bacteria are effectively killed by proper preparation and cooking.

CR is part of the environmentalist/consumer lobby that would welcome government regulation of everything. There's no problem here.

This is just the ‘setup crisis’ to get the public to support chicken processed in China. The general public is THAT stupid.

"Pharmaceutical companies are not making new antibiotics."

And, whose holding them back from making new antibiotics? Big govt and overburdening regulations.

Are there people who didn’t already know this?
Are there people who eat raw chicken?

I like my chicken cooked, this kills most of it.

But now we will have chicken from China with “USA” on the label to worry about

I’m sure there is an offshoot of Paleo nutrition that only eats raw food.

That always solves the problem same will all meat. It is why in the 1,000 of years mankind has been here we learned long ago how it was suppose to be done.

When I was a kid, Mother made the best fried chicken. There were 5 kids and everyone had their piece. Mine was the drumstick and gizzard.

One day I was eating with Mother and Daddy and it just occurred to me that the chicken wasn’t as good as when we were kids and even many years after that.

I mentioned it to Mother and she said she knew it wasn’t as good but she had no idea why.

I just realized it might be the chickens aren’t as good quality.
