Most chicken sold in stores is contaminated, Consumer Reports says

A report released Thursday indicates that just about all chicken sold in U.S. stores contains harmful bacteria, and nearly half are tainted with a so-called superbug that's resistant to antibiotics.

The Consumer Reports study, its most comprehensive to date on poultry, tested raw chicken breasts purchased at retail outlets nationwide for six bacteria, then checked for antibiotic resistance. The results showed nearly half of the samples were contaminated with at least one bacterium resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics, what's known as a superbug. Slightly more than 10 percent were tainted with two superbugs.

That finding is cause for alarm, said Urvashi Rangan, a toxicologist and executive director of Consumer Reports National Research Center.

"We're in a public health crisis," Rangan said. "Pharmaceutical companies are not making new antibiotics."

Yum! That is the best way to cook a chicken.
Stuffed, roasted and served with taters and gravy, maybe some green beans on the side and some rolls.
Yumm!

IMO chickens are as good of quality. They are factory raised on a diet designed to make them grow fast.

Many spend their entire life in a small cage barely big enough for their body, but it doesn’t allow movement. Through genetic breeding the breast gets so heavy their legs can’t hold them up.

Far different then the chickens we had when I grew up.

How about if we cook the chicken before we eat it?

Tell that to Church's. Last time I ate there, I lost weight.

I don’t think cooking kills all the bacteria. Not from what I’ve read on cooking websites, anyway.

Cooking the chicken is all well & good, but you have to be very careful to wash/clean everything the chicken comes into contact with, too.

Yep, Who expects to be able to eat raw or rare chicken?

Yuk, learned that when young. I Remember my parents telling me under-cooked pork would give me 'worms'

I always rinse it in hot water then wash my hands with soap then fully cook it.

Gee whiz. Darn good thing I don't eat raw chicken, hmm?

And in general, I don't treat my raw poultry with antibiotics. So the superbugs will have to find a way to survive high temperature.

When I was a kid, they used to make Mock City Chicken.
Does anyone remember that?

It was ground pork shaped on a stick to look like a drumstick and it was breaded and fried.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_chicken

Maybe that was a regional thing.

It will be ‘sold’ that way. The agreement to send US chickens to China, for processing and return, is already in place. THIS could be the ‘justifying crisis’.

Now it's even more important that proper, sanitary methods be used when handling raw chicken..

especially a cutting board used ONLY for chicken.and one that doesn't nick...bacteria can remain in the cracks..and one that can go in the dishwasher. Important also to wipe down all oountertops..and wash sinks...and, oh yeah..WASH HANDS!!

I just realized it might be the chickens aren’t as good quality.

Same here. I make homemade chicken soup a lot and noticed quite a few years ago that the broth wasn't as tasty as it used to be. Have to add chicken bullion/granules to flavor it up. It's not my mother's chicken anymore.

Wait until that chicken from CHINA -- recently approved by fedzilla -- hits the shelves...!

(And before someone asks, I will post this until the idiots in government alter this insane and now dangerous UNILATERAL FREE – NOT FAIR -- trade policy with China and the fools in the multinationals STOP exporting the production of EVERYTHING to China and bring those jobs home.

As you think about that, recall that in ancient times, the Romans and others would catapult disease-riddled corpses over the walls of cities they besieged to sicken and kill the enemy. The Chinese know that history even if we obviously have forgotten it. Get my drift there?

On a recent visit to China, a friend spotted this ad in a Beijing newspaper. He sent me the photo with a translation of the ad copy.

BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR AND JOIN CHINA’S NEW MONIED ELITE!

Yes, you can now join the millions of happy and prosperous Chinese citizens taking advantage of the growing numbers of American and Western multinational corporations “outsourcing” their production to the hard-working and industrious people of China. This outsourcing has now spread to their food supplies and ingestible items. Since these firms pay us for gross weight – and this new weight will be pretty gross – and the stupid American government only spot-checks imported items in these categories (they just got lucky on the anti-freeze thing), it has opened an entirely new opportunity which our beloved Chairman is offering to any Chinese citizen willing to do a little of what the foolish Americans call “grunt work.”

Installing one of these state-of-the-art food additive production facilities behind YOUR hovel is as simple as clipping the coupon below and sending it to the address shown. Your production plant will be shipped to you in 4 to 6 weeks. Supplies are limited so don’t fart around. ACT NOW!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

These silly Americans have an expression we have “borrowed” and modified to describe this new and exciting venture: “Don’t give me any s**t.”

Our motto will be “We won’t GIVE you any s**t. But we’ll SELL it to you fools at a really great price.”

Better yet, we convince them to COME HERE to pick it up and save us the shipping costs.

AND LOOK FOR A NEW DROP-DEAD MONEY-MAKER COMING SOON. SOYLENT YELLOW PROMISES TO BE BIG!!

AND YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED TO KNOW THAT THE “CHERY” PERSONAL VEHICLE TO BE IMPORTED BY CHRYSLER IS SIMPLY A HORIZONTALLY MODIFIED VARIATION OF THE VERTICAL UNIT SHOWN ABOVE. WE SIMPLY SLAP AN ENGINE AND SOME WHEELS ON THAT PUPPY AND OFF SHE GOES! AMERICA’S VAST ILLEGAL POPULATION OUGHT TO SNAP THEM UP LIKE TACOS.
