The elderly man accused of shooting a movie theater patron in Florida after an argument over text messaging told police that he fired because he "was in fear of being attacked."

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a news conference today that the victim, Chad Oulson, 43, was texting his young daughter's babysitter when an argument erupted with Reeves over texting during previews before the movie "Lone Survivor."

As far as him being annoyed by the texting goes, all he had to do was move to another seat, but no, he wanted to demonstrate his authority like back when he was a policeman. If the textor had violated any law[s] previously, there was an off duty Deputy in the audience with the authority to arrest him. He took no action.

He did take action. He went to the theater management/staff and complained. When he returned, the dead a-hole badgered him for "tattling". Things escalated from there.

It's like when you are stuck in a traffic jam and some a-hole decides to jump traffic by speeding on the shoulder and cutting in front of a car, then gets all hissy because you hit your horn at him.

They know when they are being jerks but they can and do get violent when they are called out about it.

Yea. Here’s my thought process.
Most cops are required to carry off duty.
Off-duty cop stops shooter.
Media doesn’t bother to mention this fact or buries.
Why?
I’m betting it’s because they don’t want to report that a guy with a guy STOPPED a nut who was shooting people. That would be a positive aspect of a gun story, verboten by presstitutes.

Don’t know, but that’s where the logic takes me.

I witnessed an interesting exchange that really put things into perspective concerning the character of SOME LEO. It was a big lotto night and I was in a rather long line in a convenience store. The clerk was obviously having some issues and the patience of the patrons was starting to erode. A guy walks in to the store (plain clothes), gets some things, looks at the line and approaches the next guy in line and says, “Bud, I need to go in front of you. I’m a cop.” The guy looks at him, looks at the line, looks back and says, “I think you should go to the end of the line and wait like the rest of us.” The cop pulled attitude and asked if he was getting smart (or maybe did he think that was smart... something about being smart). I couldn’t hear it all until it got a little louder. But here was the catch phrase that sent the officer packing.

“You want smart? Here’s smart. I need you to get pissed off, do something stupid, touch me or arrest me for not allowing you to cut in line. Then I need to sue you, this city, the police department and everyone else. Then I wouldn’t need to buy lottery tickets. This is a free country. So you go and do what you think you should do, tough guy.” Followed up by a tiny young lady, “...You should go to the end of the line, officer.”

He left the store all together. I almost asked to see his badge so I could get the number but didn’t want to escalate the tense situation. (I chickened out).

according to he version, this 71 year old had time to reach into his pants, grab his weapon, and point it at the victim. If there was a sucker punch coming as a follow on to the popcorn, it would have happened by the time he had a gun pointed at the guy...

The other thing is the movie hadn’t started. The old cop told him to stop texting during the previews.

Continue your conversation with your partner that you had while the house lights were up and see if the entire audience doesn't glare at you. Go on, try talking at normal voice during the previews and see if others don't think you are ruining their movie experience.

I'm just wondering when I'm going to need a permit to conceal/carry popcorn.

Isn't that already a law in NYC? Don't you need, like, a note from the doctor or something to buy popcorn at a movie theater there? Maybe that's only for the large buckets.

Many on FR are prejudging this EXACTLY the same way the race-grievance industry prejudged Zimmerman.

Baloney --

This is a retired cop with a good record and yet the judge is holding him without bond because the seriousness of the charge and the evidence of his guilt is substantial.

But apparently he has an issue with texting in a show and needed to prove that he was still an authority figure.

Do these law professors even undersrand simple law.

There exists a liberal academic bias.

Stalinists lie. ALWAYS.

Even if the law professors are aware of the genuine facts in the Zimmerman case, they serve to push an agenda to repeal such laws (and disarm the general populace). Creating confusion among the public by deliberate distortion of facts serves that end.

The last movie hubby and I went to was National Treasure 2. Back in early ‘08. That was the last time we asked a set of grandparents to keep all the kids at once. Haven’t been to a movie theater since.

Too many kids now, too expensive and nearly zero worthwhile storylines.

"The sheriff said at a news conference that Reeves' son — who was off duty from his job as a Tampa officer — was walking into the theater when the shooting happened. Nocco said Reeves briefly struggled with an off-duty deputy but released the weapon. The gun was jammed and unable to fire again."

So let me get this straight, the off duty officer who struggled with the shooter was the shooter's own son?

And judging from your response, a good decent one. How I wish there were more like you. I remember the police as people who would interact with you. Would counsel wayward youth about to go down the wrong path of life. Would settle arguments and if you broke the law, put you in jail. However, making arrests was not the main focus of their existence. Keeping the peace was. How I wish that was true of the police now.

I suppose my name calling is because of frustration and sadness of what things used to be and what they are now.

How does ‘texting’ bother other moviegoers ? It would make more sense if he was TALKING on the phone, or had the SPEAKER on, but texting ? That makes no noise.

There is light and a repeated "click click clickty click click click click" sound. Not everyone has an iPhone. And even an iPhone likely has a glowing screen.

25-30 people in entire theater. GET UP AND MOVE AWAY from someone bothering you. Why does everything have to be a confrontation. There were other seats open EVERYWHERE. People need to learn how to walk away.

Throwing the popcorn was a clear escalation of force

You're kidding right??? that called for the use of deadly force???

BTW I have it on good authority that all the kernels were popped in that bag, therefore lessening the chance of escalation.

I like your comment.

These days too many people are too quick to escalate things instead of diffusing them. It's really not that hard to diffuse a situation if you keep your wits about you. Not adding to an already tense scene is key.

It Tampa, either man could have diffused the situation. Neither did.

Something I found at that bottom link:

“She also stated that she didn't hear the shots in her theater and didn't realize anything was going on till a theater employee turned off their movie and told the patrons leave.”

So for those who say that the texting in the back of the theater wasn't disturbing the other patrons, apparently neither was the discharge of a firearm. Some people are that immersed into their own theater experience.

Just goes to show that lack of response from other patrons doesn't constitute a complete picture of “witness accounts”.

There were a lot of other people in the theater, it seems the argument had not gotten so out of control that they noticed, at least until the popcorn was thrown.

At least one patron is on record saying she didn't even know of the gunshot(s) or scuffle in the back of the theater. She was unaware of any of it until the "movie" stopped and the theater was cleared.

that she was trying to shield her husband makes sense to me... it is a natural reaction

If she was shielding him, it means that she knew he was about to get shot, but HE did not know it. I think the shooting happened SO fast there was no way either of them knew. (Again, pure speculation.)
