Study Finds People with Guns More At-Risk for Suicide and Homicide
daily beast ^ | january 20, 2014 | Brandy Zadrozny

Posted on 01/21/2014 10:46:44 AM PST by lowbridge

Now, a new meta-analysis of gun research—the first systematic review of its kind—from the University of California, San Francisco, published in Annals of Internal Medicine today, has seemingly put an end to the debate over safety, at least in terms of suicide and homicide. Pooling results from 15 investigations, researchers found that a person with access to a gun is unequivocally less safe in terms of intentional death. Those with the ability to get to a gun are three times as likely to commit suicide and twice as likely to be the victim of a homicide than people without access.

Previous studies that include population level estimates have pegged the risks as even higher.

Guns are the most popular and effective method of killing—both of oneself and of others. Around 31,000die by the gun annually and gun deaths make up over half of all completed suicides and over two-thirds of all homicides.

The study found that access to guns had a different effect on men and women. Men were nearly four times more likely to commit suicide than when firearms were not accessible, while women were almost three times more likely to be victims of homicide.  And while men make up over three quarters of suicides and homicides overall, women with firearm access are more than twice as likely to be a victim of homicide than a man with gun access, mainly because of the increased threat of domestic violence.

Y'mean suicidal and homocidal people with guns are more than likely to use a gun to commit suicide or homocide ?

How much did THIS study cost ?

Yeah, but before they were like 100x more likely; that’s why they bought the gun

From the second article...

"Even those who muster these findings in support of gun limits acknowledge they fail to draw a causal link between gun ownership and victimization.

The 14 studies considered by the UC San Francisco team were observational studies, and they could not make a causal link either."

If this study was done by the left, and who else would do it, you can do away with the suicide part altogether. Why are they even concerned with it when they want to kill old people and babies and backed Cavorkian’s quest. I would think that if anyone wanted to commit suicide the left would GIVE them a gun for free.

Let's try a bigger sample. It is well established that people in New York, who have no access to guns, are much more likely to be victims of homicides committed with guns than say, people in Texas.

On the other hand, people in New York who have thwarted the law and have acquired access to guns probably are more likely to both perpetrate crime as well as be a victim.

People are willing to accept risks which they assume and control. A person could go skydiving on Sunday and complain all day long that his employer is exposing him to cleaning solvents on Monday.

So, I am willing to accept the risk that I create for myself by choosing to have a gun. Managing and minimizing that risk is something I enjoy as a responsible adult. But I am not willing to accept the risk that comes from being unarmed and at the mercy of those who might wish to do me harm.

At least this article makes it somewhat clear that the deaths from suicide by one’s own gun dwarf the deaths from homicide by one’s own gun. That comes down to how one feels about the individual’s right to end it all.

(Most Libs would outlaw suicide because it is illegal to destroy government property...)

This guy cannot even do 3rd grade math:

"without access" means ZERO ACCESS

"without: - out of the limits of; beyond" Webster`s Dict.

stupoid illogical statement:

"Those with the ability to get to a gun are three times as likely to commit suicide and twice as likely to be the victim of a homicide than people without access"

\access "www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/access‎

access ="a way of getting near, at, or to something or someone. : a way of being able to use or get something." : Webster

if the guy has no way to get a gun, it is physically impossible for him to shoot himself or anyone else.

Since this guy`s reasoning is illogical and mathematically impossible I will correct his stupoid statement:

"Those with the ability to get to a gun are infinitely as likely to commit suicide and infinitesimally as likely to be the victim of a homicide than people without access" because "without access" means a person having no gun in his hand cannot pull the trigger, you idiot.

ZERO CHANCE = if"NO ACCESS" = ZERO ACCESS =WITHOUT ACCESS

This guy is a liar and moron at the same time- incredible!

more bs commie progaganda. Liars do figure.

Japanese murder rate is fairly low. IIRC one of the world's lowest.

Suicide, on the other hand, is one of the world's highest.

Simple statistics test: how many firearms murder victims are armed with a firearm at the time they are murdered?

Also, how many suicide attempts are there among people without firearms access? With a firearm an attempt is very likely to be successful, while attempts with, say, pills are not as successful.

When they vote away my guns, I still have a vote: 30 of them per magazine.

I’m sure they’re including all ‘homicides’ in their data, given their agenda.

Well then, this study settles it, gun ownership is good for everyone. Gun owners obviously want to keep their guns. And lefties should wan gun owners to keep them especially because the risk for suicide is greater for gun owners. Cuomo basically said that gun owners have no place in NY, so I’m sure he would be happy with suicide for gun owners.

This includes Obama's sons who get their firearms on the black market.

If Obama's sons were excluded from the crime statistics the USA would be one of the safest and least violent countries in the world.

1) It's easier to commit suicide with a gun than with a coat hanger.

2) Homicide by firearm usually occurs when the victim loses a gunfight.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

That’s becasue without a gun you cannot commit homicide easily.

One could go 70 years without a gun, and suddenly find out you have Terminal Cancer. Then you go buy a gun.... and months later you commit Suicide.

Padded stats.

the Chicago gun free zone should have the crime statistics of Mayberry.......but it doesn’t

TX 2012 murder rate 4.4/100k.

NY 2012 rate 3.5/100k.

I don’t have numbers for gun murders in these states as compared to total murders. But it seems likely that TX, with many more guns, has at least as many gun murders as NY.
