In Mexico, people have been successfully fighting back against oppression, beating back drug cartels and now starting war against govt criminals in league with the cartels. This makes it a bit easier for the not-so-bad bad guys to turn things around and join against the still-bad guys.
To see how the govt reacted to the success of the citizen defense groups:

La Jornada: Why did you join that group? "I am poor, and I needed money to support my family. But I didn't expect to kill a person. I didn't even want to assassinate anyone."
La Jornada: What did they offer you to join the Templars? "They offered me money (12,000 pesos [USD $902] per month), but they are liars, they don't have money, and they don't pay what they say. They are poor."

Reminds me of a scene from VIVA ZAPATA. The peasants fight and win the revolu-u-shun.
The politicians disarm the peasants.
Then the Army attacks them.
That scene plays out in other movies also.
The army eventually has to pick sides on terms based on something other than a pay check.
Let’s see here. The government taking the side of the criminals and disarming the citizens. Must be Democrats.
It’s a shame they have stolen the name of a worthy brotherhood.
